Yale Parents thread

Earliest notification for continuing students is June 2.
They actually do Frosh first so they can decide if the award is sufficient for them to enroll at Yale.

@tonymom Are you referring to the regular Yale eBill - ePay monthly account statements? Fall semester charges usually don’t show up before the July statement… Seems like the changes with FAFSA this year have been causing a few hiccoughs at Yale Fin Aid. Back in November 2016, they were listing the initial application deadline for continuing students for the full 2017 - 2018 school year as February 2, 2017, then sometime in late December or early January, it mysteriously changed to April 7, and now April 17. (thanks to @musicmerit for the link to the page with the new initial application deadline.)

Thanks for info. Yes got the email that tells you 1) this is the big bill 2) you need to set up your payment plan soon…
Guess this year’s timeframe is throwing me off a bit as kid was ED recruit so we had FA package by December of senior year HS. Things this year just seem very late and, as mentioned, deadlines keep shifting. Being a bit OCD, I filled out all applications by January so now the long wait. Just wanted to make sure we hadn’t missed some email or announcement. Must practice patience :wink:

Nope, timeline is about right. You can set up your payment plan based on what it was last year and if something chances dramatically, you can call and they will update it. Since we had to use 2015 taxes, there should not be much change from last year (keeping my fingers crossed on that one).

I just phoned the Financial Aid office… all the paperwork is in!
I always worry that something didn’t make it, or we were missing something important.
I appreciate the FA, but I always stress that one year, it won’t be there. I know that my stress is unwarranted, but until the FA letter comes through, I imagine ‘the worst case scenario’!

So even though I filed in January, did the retrieval tool that worked, and thought everything was fine because no message from Yale portal or email, I just found out I need to request an actual IRS transcript.
The people at FA are very nice but I feel like there has been a lack of communication on some level. Is it always like this? UGH!!!

Hello Yale parents! I have a DS who’ll be attending Bulldog Days soon. She’s going alone. Any tips you might pass along on how she can make the most of the experience?

Looks like those new SATs turned out OK, @LadyMeowMeow - congratulations! Also, welcome to one of the nicest threads on CC - we hope you stay.

Imo, she ought to relax, have fun, and meet lots of people. There will be panels/sessions/tours focusing on many different kinds of academic and extracurricular pursuits; I’m sure she’ll find some that pique her interest.

@LadyMeowMeow Congrats to your DS. We just returned from Bulldog Saturday. it was a lot of fun. Its also a lot of programming, so my adivce is to stay fluid with the schedule and when she needed to take a break, to just relax and hit a coffee shop. You don’t need to attend everything.

As your DS is going solo, she might particularly enjoy the first orientation session which is very interactive - an easy way to meet fellow students who she might then enjoy and run into the rest of the day.

We enjoyed the residential tour, the engineering tour, a Master Class, the Deans speech and performances, easting in the residential halls etc. My daughter is still deciding between schools and so it was more stressful for her emotionally than it is for some as she was constantly thinking things through – that is tiring! But it was a great visit. We enjoyed having tea one night at Blue State Coffee with lots of the Yalies around us - would suggest that one.

@LadyMeowMeow tell her to make friends, be social. Visit everything and watch the different performances (especially the A Capella groups) . Get up early and explore, come home late- her hosts wont be upset, they expect it. The kids there genuinely love their school so ask questions. But make lots and lots of new friends. My daughter is still close with her group from BBD.

Not quite sure how she managed this one but next year will be year three that my kid has a single room. Either she is outrageously lucky or she is incredibly manipulative… LOL.
Wasn’t there a link that had all of the floor plans? Her room will be a lot smaller than this year and her Ikea storage thing was not found after it was taken from her suite over the summer. It might be good to plan ahead for space considering I just brought home 4 suitcases and a storage bin of clothing and barely made a dent in her room. :confused:

@DeepBlue86 You remember. But do the other parents here know about your penchant for loosing encomiastics of H on the world? If so, this is a very nice thread indeed! :slight_smile:

@bentandbarc @Memmsmom My DD is still deciding, too. Thanks very much for the recommendations. It sounds like a great opportunity to make friends. I’ll tell her about Blue State Coffee – she’ll certainly like the name.

@LadyMeowMeow - they’ve heard my encomiastics/panegyrics for Y, but would probably be very nice to me anyway. Boola boola…

And a donut from Donut Crazy!! It’s right next door to Blue State. I swear I am addicted to them.

@LadyMeowMeow - first, congrats to your daughter! Bulldog Days are very busy! The kids get a schedule and there is more to do than is possible. The presentation by the dean of admissions(I think it was him) was awesome, as were the student performances that followed. There is also a huge activity fair and an academic fair. The kids can talk to students from different clubs, get on mailing lists, etc and can also talk to dept reps about different majors. Both were really helpful. Other than that, have fun! Talk to as many people as possible and get a sense of whether or not you can see yourself there. My son had already committed, so it was a no-stress visit for him. Just reenforced his love for Yale.

@tonymom reading your post about completing the FinAid application including IRS Data Retrieval Tool back in January and still having to follow up with a tax transcript made me a bit nervous as I also completed the application in January, and also used the retrieval tool. So I gave SFS a call earlier this afternoon to ask if I needed to send a transcript even though I had used the data retrieval tool. They pulled up my son’s file and said no, the application is complete. When you wrote “…I just found out…” was that by speaking to SFS directly, or was it some other way?

@tdy123
Yes I spoke with someone at the office but maybe they misunderstood as my son still needed to get a transcript for his non-filing status which is a new requirement this year. I will call again to confirm. It seems to me that if I had confirmation on my end from IRS that took worked back in January I shouldn’t have to go through all the hassle of getting a transcript now. And when I spoke to the FA office in December the woman assured me the DRT would be fine. I understand transcript is needed for those who filed after the tool stopped working but for those of us who completed it early and it worked…very frustrating.
Thanks for your feedback. I’m going to call again to clarify. Perhaps the woman was referring to my son’s transcript. :((

@tonymom The requirement for a student non-filing letter is new as well. I think all the changes this year are confusing the folks at the office and the parents. If you do end up needing to get a tax transcript, the quickest way is to use the IRS website. With a non-pre-pay cell phone account, you can register on the IRS website, verify identity with the cell account, and download a tax transcript the same day. Those unable to use the cell phone verification process have to wait for a mailed verification number which adds about 7-10 days to the process

@tdy123
Thanks! That’s the path we were on…fast forward to hubby calling me from his office (we live and he works in Santa Cruz mtns so little cell coverage) saying next step was IRS text to his phone. I get to rush to get said phone from him…drive frantically to top of nearest hill with coverage (driving around bunnies, quail, squirrel and other seemingly suicidal forest critters) and wave phone around. What happens?..he calls me on my cell to let me know IRS message says “sending verification via mail 5-10 days in mail”…
Cue me wanting to cry like a sad Maria Vonn Trapp in the hills :((
So…I’m going to call again and hope it was all a horrible misunderstanding.
Thanks for info tho. Lord knows I need the help.

For those of you who waived Yale Health insurance and are unhappy because specialists are not covered on the basic plan - the same specialists who see full coverage patients at YH also see patients across town at what used to be called Yale Medical Group. (Googling a specialty like ENT plus YMG still seems to work.) Ask your pcc for a name, not a referral if you waived, or just Google the appropriate department-- names and bios are on the website.
