Yale Parents thread

@DeepBlue86
Thanks for link. So jealous of classes available! How exciting!

Her sorority is still old school. They take checks.

Count me in.
This community has been so kind to us.
I’ll be driving from St Louis for move-in day. And I’ve never been to Mory’s!

Mory’s is a pretty interesting place with a lot of history. Maybe 1 round of cups, without spinning the cup on someone’s head, unless they want to, lol!

Hi I’d love to meet up!! count me in! and I’d also love to see the “blue book”. One course DS took really opened up doors for him both for a research position and in thinking about career paths. It sounded amazing!

Scrolled up further and thanks Deep Blue for the link!

My son is halfway done with undergrad… getting ready to start junior year. This is making me quite nostalgic.

Yale Parents:
Any suggestions for waterfront dining in New Haven? Is there such a thing?

P.S. Scanning the Blue Book and I’m so amazed at the classes offered.
Notable faculty…Harold Bloom and Bob Woodward.
Anyone else you’d suggest kiddo “must” take a class from?
Which classes did your kiddos say were worthwhile?

Would love to meet up. Son is going to be a junior and he’s going to be moving himself in for the first time. He has to be in town a few days before the dorms open so he’s bringing his stuff in his car - last year we met him with a U haul! I’ll be out of town for move in but may come up a little later if he wants help setting up or realizes he left stuff at home.

@tonymom - this place opened a year or so ago and seems to be well-regarded (I haven’t been, but I know the location): http://shellandbones.com/. Check out the menu and photos to see if it’s what you had in mind. You’ll need to drive there.

@tonymom I would not bother with a waterside eatery in New Haven. Go to either West Haven/Milford or go in the other direction to Westbrooke/Clinton area. There are a few really great places in both those areas and nothing really notable that I have heard of in New Haven. Our favorites are Lenny and Joe’s (there are two locations and one is less formal than the other but both near water). The food never disappoints and is very well known in CT. Its only about 25 min from New Haven off of I95. There is Turks in West Haven that is my moms all time favorite but I think its more nostalgic to her. Jimmy’s used to be across the street and on the water but I don’t think its there any more. There is a smaller less formal place to eat across from the water and its amazing but I can’t remember the name, but I could definitely bring you there. They have great platters and lobster rolls. That whole Savin Rock area is neat because it used to be a huge tourist destination and beach boardwalk. Everyone has photos and stories about the old boardwalk and its rides/arcade. It might be something fun for you to check out.

@Memmsmom may take you up on that
Thanks for the suggestions. Just trying to branch out from Pepes as much as I love that pizza
@DeepBlue86 will investigate! Kiddo and I aren’t seafood “folks” but it may work.

BTW Has anyone done the “tour” of Harkness Tower? Apparently you can be there for the bell ringing…we signed up and surprisingly kiddo wants to go with me. Progress or “resistance is futile”…

I did the tour of Harkness Tower tour last fall and it was really interesting! Great views from up there. Lots of steps and small spaces, but worth it. It is fascinating to see the carillon bells and the way they are played.

My DD is starting Yale in August. She’s participating in the 4-day FOOT hiking trip and plans to fly from Southern California to meet-up with her group by herself . . . My wife and I will meet her in New Haven on move-in day with all of her stuff! Was wondering whether she should fly into Hartford or New York to catch a shuttle to New Haven? Any suggestions? Thanks! (She’s so excited to start . . . she’s in my old college, Morse ('85), and will be in Durfee on Old Campus)

@PicoLA - Congratulations!!! My DD is a raising sophomore. We live in CA (Bay Area). Last year, she came home for Oct break, Thanksgiving break and Christmas break. She tried different methods of transportation to different airports, but the combo she preferred the best and recommends is Hartford (Bradley Airport) and take an Uber ride to & from. No reservations needed, no tickets to purchase, her ride is there w/in 3-5 mins and sometimes she’s able to share the Uber ride w/ a fellow Yalie taking the same flight and save a few bucks.

I agree that Hartford and Uber is the easiest way to go, though from the west coast that likely means a connecting flight rather than a nonstop. It is a long slog to New Haven from JFK, La Guardia or Newark though, whether by shuttle or train, so overall I think it’s worth a connection to Hartford to avoid that.

As a parent flying in, Hartford is still easier than the NY/NJ airports, but the difference is not as big as it is for a student, assuming you’re going to be getting a rental car at the airport. The drive from Newark isn’t too bad actually in my opinion, assuming one takes the Tappan Zee Bridge rather than the George Washington Bridge. Driving to/from JFK or La Guardia, obviously, can be more problematic depending on time of day.

We live close to Newark airport, and my GPS (and Waze) seems to have a fixation with going over the George Washington Bridge rather than the Tappan Zee. I don’t know why.

I just ignore it unless something on the radio makes me think that, for once, they have it right. Just be prepared to go against your GPS’s directions.

We’ve tried all combinations: sfo:Newark, SFO:Hartford via Philly, SFO:New Haven via Philly toTweed. The real challenge for west coast students is the connector. We learned the hard way not to let Expedia pick connectors with less than a 2hr layover as originating flights are often delayed due to weather. I had assumed Tweed would be super expensive as compared to Hartford but it ended up being around the same and less hassle with expensive Uber.
The one plus with Newark are variety of flights and no connector.

I will have to give TappanZee a try as we are always routed to GW Bridge and sit and sit in traffic :frowning:
