Yale Parents thread

@CT1417 - I just checked OpenTable and a number of the fancier places still have tables in prime time for next Friday…but you may want to play it by ear or go somewhere more casual where you don’t need to reserve.

Thanks @DeepBlue86 – I think I will play it by ear because I have no idea what my son will want to do: eat with me, hang with his roommates, unpack his stuff…

I don’t think I will be fine dining material after a day of move-in. I did not book a hotel, so nowhere to clean up. I am going to drive home Fri night and return Sat morning for Assembly, and to bring up anything else that we learn he needs once we have seen the lay of the place Friday.

I can’t believe it is next week! Need to organize the piles of purchases strewn around the house!

@CT1417 there was so much food both filling and healthy at the open house that we didn’t need to eat again. After I left she explored and I believe she found snacks with her suite mates. She was able to change because it was her room but I was all sweaty and tired. I wasn’t really in a mindset to eat out.

Are bed risers needed for storage? Any experience good or bad?

I would wait and see. My kid (freshman year) was in a bedroom where the only configuration was bunking two beds. Tiny.

DS thought the optimal height for his Tupperware storage bins was a few inches higher than BBB bed risers. A quick trip to Home Depot and they cut a 4"x4" x8’ post into 2 sets of custom risers. His roommate was thrilled to get the second set and it all cost less that the ready made plastic variety.

Also - some of the beds platforms can be raised pretty easily - meaning, there are notches in the head and foot boards and the bed platform can be raised to the highest level (which allowed the standard dresser to be placed underneath). I only knew this because one of the beds in my daughter’s room was already set up this way, but the other bed was not. My daughter claimed the bed that was set up to the lower setting, and when her roommate arrived, I helped her reconfigure the other bed to the regular level.

I think that’s the tricky thing, every dorm has it’s own setup so it is very hard to predict! My daughter ended up with a huge double with tons of storage, two huge clothes closets plus one small storage closet, plus a long and deep shelf that spanned one side of the room. But some of her friends had tiny rooms with one small closet shared between two people.

It really depends on the bed room. My daughter had one year where it was impossible to raise the bed because there were built in drawers under it. The next year had two separate beds but the room was quite large. She didn’t need the lift. This year the bed in the room is already raised.

Thanks for the input on risers. That was an education! I guess I assumed all the beds were standard. Will wait and see. Can’t believe move in is already here…

We bought risers but kept the receipt. I returned them.
This year is tricky for us because the IKEA storage she had her freshman year and would prob be perfect for under the bed in her single this year was stolen over the summer last year. I don’t want to buy and put together a new one and have it be too big for the tiny room. UGH… I expect to be there twice this week to move her in and that wasn’t in the plan. We saw the room and took pics but didn’t measure or put something in the room for perspective. This could be very interesting with her mass pile of clothing…

I guess I am going to miss the coffee get together. My D doesn’t fly in from Germany until 8/28, so I will only be in New Haven Monday evening (8/28) and most of the day Tuesday (8/29). I’ll be at the Game though hosting a tail gate party for D, her friends and fellow alums. Will give more details as the date approaches.

yeah, us also. JFK on the 28th (or Amtrak from Boston to NH, still unclear). DS and GF coming in from Greece. Cutting it close. What are we doing wrong @Tperry1982? :)). Just kidding,

@IxnayBob - cutting it close indeed. Must be senioritis.

Well, I’m home from move-in. That was a TINY room to which my son was assigned! A wardrobe with 3 small drawers was all the clothing storage provided. There wasn’t even a desk in the room, though we made a call and maintenance was great about bringing it right away. No dresser - we were told it was either the wardrobe OR the dresser. Since there was no closet, doing without the wardrobe wasn’t an option. Son didn’t complain. But he’s not organized enough to keep things out away in such a situation. I shudder.

@Community2605 -you could touch both walls of my daughter’s room at the same time. But she actually ended up loving it. She could close the door and shut out everything if she wanted or go an be sociable in the common room. Being an only child, having her own space was a plus, no matter how small. Remember, he is young, and probably over the top excited and nervous about Yale. He won’t be spending that much time in the room anyway. We’ve all been there. You survived. We’re proud.

Moving in this past Wednesday went very well! Better than expected but as S was a sophomore less fanfare so a bit anticlimactic :frowning:
Still the shared double with common room at TD (new transfer) was quite roomy. They lucked out! Have to say I envy those with stylish minded kiddos who make it truly a work of art. We were lucky to get basic furniture and a bed made. FWIW Port Jeff ferry was great and super convenient. Well worth the extra $$$ in my estimation.

I would like to thank @Tperry1982 again for the recommendation of Dorm Room Movers. It truly worked out perfectly - they picked up all of the packed stuff out of my daughter’s Old Campus room in May, and delivered it straight to her room in the residential college on Friday.

The weather could not have been more perfect for move-in - mid 70s with a nice breeze. Quite a contrast to last year when it was sweltering hot!

My daughter went from having an enormous double with tons of storage to a tiny double with a wardrobe similar to what @Community2605 described. My daughter ended up lofting her bed just to get a few extra feet of storage, and I made a trip to Target and Bed Bath and Beyond for some under bed storage. The pickings were slim - quite a different experience shopping on move-in day with no planning!

What a contrast leaving my daughter this year versus last - last year I held it all together when we said our goodbyes, and lost it after I rounded the corner of Old Campus. As a wise person said, saying goodbye was like 18 years of my daughter’s life compressed into 15 minutes. I had a hard time that first month. This year - seeing my daughter’s joy at being back “home”, reunited with her friends, excited about the year ahead - I left with a happy heart.

@Tperry1982 - Son might be nervous and excited, but he’s a junior.

Should’ve put an emoji in there or something. I meant it to be friendly.

@Community2605 I hear that- My daughter (also a junior) has the same type of deal. Bed, Wardrobe and desk. We ended up taking the bed apart, turning it along the window wall and raising it up. We added a storage block book case with 6 baskets under it. We used the space behind the storage to keep things like snacks, drinks, spare things and we had three baskets we put on top of the wardrobe that she had for toiletries, school supplies and cleaning supplies. Her desk became a vanity mostly but she doesn’t study at her desk because its uncomfortable so that was fine. Her biggest issue is that the shoe rack for over the door cant be used because the door wont close. Its too long for the wardrobe. We still have to figure that one out. But hey, a single is a single…
