Yale Parents thread

I had a friend at Yale who used to cut his own hair. He didn’t look much worse than the rest of us, and he saved money.

@Hunt — Thanks for the laugh! I don’t see that happening, although his hair rarely looks styled as he doesn’t own a comb or brush AFAIK.

He was willing to take the train home in order to have his hair cut but his guy is away for a couple of weeks, so he may be trying @IxnayBob’s guy. Thanks all!

Broadway Hair is where my son goes. It’s all walk-in business, so he doesn’t have to worry about appointments - just goes when he has the need - and a moment.

I like the idea of having a friend do it. Its like a screw date… see just how much you trust your friends. LOL

Just saw Steve Martin reference doing a play at the Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven. Has anyone attended a play there? How is it as a venue?

It looks like a warehouse, and it’s next to IKEA, but it’s one of America’s leading regional theaters, and has historically sent a lot of plays to Broadway, including Pulitzer Prizewinners.

For any of the new Yale parents here who are planning to attend Family Weekend (Nov 3-5, 2017) but haven’t made hotel reservations yet, here are a couple of reasonably nice hotels that I’ve stayed in within a 20 minute drive that still have availability for the weekend: Homewood Suites by Hilton Stratford, and Hyatt Place Milford.

Just bought my tickets for The Game today. I’m excited to soak up the atmosphere!

Anyone on the Yale Payment Plan…am I missing something?..It seems they don’t list “room” charges on this month’s bill (which shows spring) and only tuition and Board and (Yale health coverage if opt in)…
Why do they wait to list room later? Very confusing…

I cannot help you on the payment plan @tonymom, but now that you have reminded me to look at the bill, I have a question.

This note appears on the invoice. Does anyone know if we need to opt out of the Yale Health plan every semester?

*Waiver requests for spring term Yale Health Hospitalization /Specialty Care Coverage must be submitted online at https://yhpstudentwaiver.yale.edu/ no later than January 31, 2018.

@CT1417 yes you need to opt out each semester :-/

@tonymom — THANK YOU! Older son’s college only requires once/year. Sigh…

I’m not sure that you need to opt out each semester. We opt out at the start of the fall semester, and that covers the entire year.

@ElMimino–that is how it operates at older son’s school, but the message on the spring tuition statement prompted me to inquire. Of course, the link provided requires my son’s log-in info, so this task will be deferred until Thanksgiving as I cannot gain access to find out if I need to opt out of coverage again.

If it is listed on your current bill then it’s being currently billed to you. If it isn’t there @CT1417 thenyou are fine. Seems spring charges and credits just listed so good idea for us all to check…and then open a bottle of wine…and contemplate FA for coming year…ugh :-/

@tonymom --No charge listed for medical insurance, so hopefully that is a good sign! I will call and inquire tomorrow, as I do not want to enroll in that medical plan.

Iirc, when you opt out of healthcare in the fall, there’s an option for just the semester or the year. If it’s not on your bill, you’re good.

Sign that I’m nuts: I got the notification of DS’s final tuition bill, and I got nostalgic

New parents: enjoy it; 4 years go by in a flash.

Question regarding parents’ weekend, for those who have attended in the past.

Is the Update with President Salvoey and Dean Chun a ‘must see’ event?

Branford College has their Family Reception overlapping the time of the Update event, so am trying to determine the need of attending the Update.

For anyone who is wondering about the medical insurance…a phone call confirmed that as reported above, if a line item charge does not appear on the bill, we are fine. It would probably help out the health dept if the bursar would stop printing that notice on every bill.

Thanks all!

H just called about opt out thing because of message but insurance wasn’t on bill. Yale said it was fine and they get lots of these calls. D did not have to fill stuff out again.

@scmom12 – I reported the same above a couple of hours ago, and commiserated with the phone rep that the university should stop printing that message on the bills so that the health dept did not need to waste their time answering these phone calls.
