New video “That’s why I toured Yale” released yesterday! go to Youtube and enter the title. It’s fun! but it’s really impossible to capture everything in a few short minutes - but they try!!! now as a senior mom I’ll really getting nostalgic - I remember liking the That’s why I chose Yale video!
Dumb question: how does it work with yearbooks? If I want to order 2 yearbooks (1 for DS, 1 for us to lend him after he loses his :)) ), how do I do this? Are they usually delivered before graduation, to enable funny writings? Is that so very HS? Do you make the mailing address where student is living now (if delivered pre-graduation) or your home address? What are other parents doing?
ETA: I Googled it. delivered in the summer, use permanent address. D’oh.
I’m sorry to say that yearbooks have never been a big deal at Yale–they come really late, and they don’t have a lot of pictures of student organizations (unless they’ve improved recently). I think it’s worth buying one, but don’t expect much.
They are fun to look at over time and to compare things/places that have changed, not changed. My Yearbook is replete with photo’s of Bladderball, Tang, and the Yankee Doodle, all things which are fading into the mists of time.
I was recently cleaning out my parent’s home (our family home actually - couldn’t get my folks out of there except with a crowbar) and came across my grandfather’s University yearbook - not Yale but what a treasure to find! that’s why when I learned of the possibility of getting the Yale yearbook I couldn’t stop pestering DS to make sure he got his pictures taken did everything to get in there!! I noticed that was one of the rare emails from Yale to the student where they cc the parent. As an aside I found it interesting that they wouldn’t let the kids be photographed in actual Yale graduating gear and instead it was some mock up.
Making plans to pick up my daughter and thought about how blessed I am that she is not only at Yale but that she is thriving there. It makes me both happy for those just accepted and crushed for so many that are truly grieving a loss right now. I am humbled that my daughter was one of the lucky few that year.
Anyhow- semester one of her Junior year is over. Let the busy two weeks home (and one week on tour with her A Capella group) begin!
I wish you and your families a safe holiday season, an incredible new year and quality time with your kids as they all return home.
After his final tomorrow, DS has only one semester left. Yale has been awesome for him. @Memmsmom, I agree about the acceptances and rejections, and the grieving, but most likely it will be parents of accepted kids coming to this thread.
I’m nostalgic about Yale, and some day DS will be also, but he’s ready for the next chapter. It’s stunning how well Yale prepares them for life after Yale.
@IxnayBob and other senior parents - 7/8 done!!! That’s how she put it. I cannot wait for graduation weekend!! My Literature major is still up in the air about after graduation plans, but I know she will be fine (and not living in my basement ). State Department still not looking good as an option. She’s still salty about that considering her language proficiencies. Either way, she’s almost done and we’re almost done paying (that ten month payment plan has been a life saver). Congrats to all the senior parents. I will be in New Haven from Thursday till the Tuesday after graduation. We must get together for coffee or a drink to celebrate our years together. =D>
Anyone’s student have experience doing LSE summer program? Just wondering what pros/cons are…
@tonymom what program is that? My kid has done numerous summer programs but I don’ recognize the acronym.
@Tperry1982
London School of Economics
Not a parent, but an alum and many of my friends did the LSE programs, particularly after freshman year. They seemed to have a really good time, and being based in London was a main contributor for this. The feedback I had from my friends was that the economics classes were easier than what was offered at Yale - I’m not sure if this view was held universally, but it was definitely a common theme.
@tonymom - Thank you!!
We are currently enjoying “blizzard conditions” here in CT. Our local news showed the normal camera of Yale’s campus and where you normally see the buildings, you only saw a red light. This means that I get one extra day with my daughter before she leaves for tour with her A Capella group. Ill take it!
While we had snow and it is cold here in MD, my D is glad she is missing all the snow up there. Though it looks like it would have been a great opportunity for her to try out the UGG Adirondack boots that Santa brought her.
DS had the good sense to spend the past week in CA with his GF. The plan is to meet at Newark airport on Saturday morning for a flight to Grand Cayman. What are the odds we all make the flight?
@IxnayBob you should be fine by then. We are hopeful she gets out of CT tomorrow at 5pm. Although we just got the call that school is now cancelled for my younger kids. I’m not complaining about the 4 day weekend. Only that working from home with a full house isn’t as productive. UGH
@memmsmom, I worry about the knock-on effects. Newark cancelled many flights yesterday, which might mean that the plane from CA tonight is in the wrong place, etc.
Hi All! Trying to find a good masseuse, close by campus for my DD. She has tons of knots in her back and should probably go more regularly than when she’s home. I see a lot of mixed reviews on Yelp for ones I’ve found, so if you or your kids have any places they like and would recommend, I’d appreciate it.
Question for those of you who fill out the CSS AND opt for the extended Yale health program…
Do you add the two semester expense ($2332) to the amount for "what portion did parents contribute/pay towards student’s education? Or is that figure strictly windfall between FA award and tuition/room/board expenses?
