Yale Parents thread

I haven’t tried that new restaurant yet, but it’s on my list.It has gotten some good reviews. I did have a nice lunch at Royal Palace if you like Chinese, it’s on Orange St. near the Knights of Columbus. They also deliver which my daughter was delighted to hear if you order 10.00 or more.

We had lunch at Ivy Noodle. My kid’s lo mein was better than my soup but it was all good.

Looking for a brunch/lunch spot today. Meeting up with bluedevilmike who attends Yale Law (MD/JD). I think we will let him pick.

This is my first trip to Yale in 25 years. IMO ,after 4 years visiting Memphis in undergrad, the “urban blight” , while present, is a bit over-stated.

Arrived last night and packing begins in earnest today. For fun, watch me headed back on Metro North loaded down with 3 suitcases, a tote bag, purse, and whatever else will fit around my neck.

curm: If you’re looking for not-too-fancy but delicious, try The Pantry in East Haven (on Sate and Mechanic, I think). Fabulous breakfast/brunch.

H is heading up to NH on Monday to help with the move-out. I was up a few weeks ago on a business trip; saw what was in S’s TINY room and was amazed at how much more STUFF there is than there was in August. Should be fun…glad I’m getting away with it this time :)

wjb, I will do that next time. We had brunch at Atticus because it was near her apartment and (more importantly) the AT&T store. It appears she was eligible for an upgrade. Who knew?

Saw lots and lots of kids shlepping their way across campus, to the train station, and 4 or 5 in that “airport”. My kid just chuckled at the thought of our fully loaded long-bed pick-up with a camper shell contrasted with a duffle and a carry-on. “Can you imagine?” Yes, dear. I can.

I was lucky to get a spot near Old Campus yesterday and smiled at all the different scenerios…duffel and a suitcase, parents struggling to get a bookcase into their wagon (we did this onece didn’t we?) and UHauls.
We had dinner at Claires…I figured I worked off nachos going up and down 4 flights a few times.
What a mess the suite was though with 5 girls accumulated things out of their rooms so they could clean, it’s amazing what you accumulate over the months that you didn’t have when you came in.

Any parents of seniors here? I know gradUation is not until May 23rd - what do the seniors do between the end of finals and graduation? Also, when did you start making hotel reservations for graduation / how many days are you guys planning on staying there?

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mom Parents out there. Hope you had a wonderful Day!

Dandemom - I really don’t remember when we made reservations, I think it was in December. We are staying in Milford and have several rooms ready.

Most seniors seem to head to Myrtle Beach - D is leaving on Tuesday and coming back to New Haven Sunday. We live about 4 hours away and are planning to do a preliminary move-out early next week and then coming back for graduation. I honestly think it would be easier if we weren’t within driving distance. Then she would have no choice but to ditch a lot of her belongings.

D leaves for work (another state) on May 28, so we don’t have much time. She has never owned a car so she will need to purchase one before she leaves. Also - there will be some additional professional wardrobe items needed, etc. Lord give me strength.

I should have asked Curm if he would mind loading some of her things in his vehicle.

D1 is taking a canoe trip in VT with friends. She was going to try to squeeze in a couple of days at Myrtle beach but decided to stay in NH and decompress instead.

We will be staying on campus in one of the RCs, cheap and convenient. We take a red eye Fri night; then go to events, eat, pack, etc. for three days and we all fly back home on Tuesday. I decided to rent a car instead of taking the train or shuttle from NYC and schlep who-knows-how-much stuff D1 has. It looks like there’s reasonable parking in Y lots on all but the final Tue.

workinprogress & entomom: Thank you so much for your responses - good luck to your D’s as they start off in this next phase. I think we are going to go the RC route too. I’m guessing they send info on that sometime in the fall.

workinprogress: Sounds like you are going to have a very busy few days after graduation. Hopefully that means D won’t have too much time to be sad about graduating.

Yes, just keep an eye on the Commencement web page, it will let you know when to send in your application to reserve a room on campus.

curm: I had what you had at Oaxaca tonight. Thanks for the recommendation, they do have a nice Mole. Debruns- I was also parked near old campus and went up and down a few times today- 5 flights for mine. Makes me appreciate all the help they got during the move-in.

I appreciated that also…I was heard saying “Where are those wheelbarrals and strong students we met a year ago?” : )
My daughter said she was going to a nice Indian restaurant today, I will have to ask the name again, but she enjoys it.

Debruns: nice Indian restaurant must be Thali 2 (by the bookstore) or Thali (on Orange).

Yale Parents
For those of you who have at least a years Yale fees payment experience.
For Financial aid purposes has there being any advantage of paying directly to the school, maybe with a payment plan or getting a plus loan and paying that off. I heard from one of those independant college advisors that if you pay cash directly to the school it gives the impression that you can affor payment and count against you the following year when they are calculating your financial aid. Is this true? I do not really get that point.

I don’t see his point, except that payments to the school ususally need to be paid that year, while a plus loan can carry over. I did a 10 payment plan with afford.com for my son all 4 years, his school only offered 4 payments.
I had a plus loan 2 years of those 4 years. One time the loan was under 5.000 and they asked me if I wanted to pay it monthly with them and I said I couldn’t, I needed more time. There was a pause, but she understood.

I haven’t with Yale yet, but might this year, I expect it to be more and my daughter has 1 less scholarship. I will wait and see the amount first before I decide, loan or payment plan.

I have 3 yrs of experience with Y FA. I have always paid directly from my checking account and each year our FA package has increased commensurate with what I’d expect given our financial situation. My impression from my limited experience is that the Y FA office does not play games and doesn’t make assumptions based on how you paid your bill.

Dandemom, it was Thali 2…she had a nice dinner before leaving her friends. New Haven has lot of treasures, it’s nice to explore them when visiting or when your student has the money/time.
