Places to stay when visiting Yale: (Posting this now just because it’s a convenient time for me, although no one has asked about hotels recently)

If you are looking for a moderate-cost option (as we have been for the past 4 years) and you are driving, I recommend the Hampton Inn at Exit 36 on I-95, Plains Road. I originally found this suggestion on CC. We have been quite happy with it.

We also like several of the chain motels at Exit 35 on I-95–I think there is a Residence Inn there, and perhaps also a Springfield. These are lower-cost alternatives to the Marriott or Omni in New Haven itself. The New Haven exit is something like 48 or 49 off I-95, so there is a bit of a drive, but it’s generally not bad. The prices everywhere seem to go up for Parents Weekend, move-in, move-out, and graduation.

If you’re looking for a high-cost (but convenient) place to stay, we like the Study better than the Omni.

Thanks for the pointers on banks. My daughter is starting at Yale this year. She already has a Chase account which is convenient since that’s what mine is and I can instantly transfer money to her. Does anyone have an idea whether the Chase is much less convenient than BofA? (There seem to be two Chase branches in New Haven, but neither is exactly “on campus”). I’ll set up the free online BofA account if necessary, but it would certainly be nice to just stick with Chase.

My son is a rising sophomore. The BOA machines are on campus and he likes the locations. I’m not sure were the Chase ATM’s are. We had webster which was 2 blocks from campus and not in the circle of travel

There are 2 Chase ATMs near campus. One is very close to Old Campus (153 College St) and the other (234 Church St) is a great location if your D’s residential college is either Silliman or TD.

Do any of you use the Yale Payment Plan for tuition payments? I did last year and got a renewal email in the spring that I glanced at - intending to go back and look later - and just yesterday noticed it again in my inbox (thankfully, since the deadline to enroll is 6/30). Although not very clear, it appears that you need to re-enroll every year. I filled out the page hit the “next” buttons and it came up with the first (now blank) enrollment form that I had just filled out. So, I’m not sure if I’m enrolled or not. I did not get any kind of confirmation email, but I can’t remember from last year if I got one or not. I didn’t do it again, since I didn’t want to be enrolled twice (once is painful enough!)
I am going to call the finance office tomorrow, but was just wondering in the meantime. Any input? I love the school, but I find the payments part of the website not very well laid-out or logical. (For one thing, I always feel like I’m on a treasure hunt to find the link to the parents payment portal…would it kill them to have an easy to locate link on there?!?)

I’m with you on that, I have asked more than once where a link is, finally I bookmarked it. The student one comes up easily enough though.
I wish also they had a site for confiriming things you send. My other children’s colleges have a page that says “pending” “received” for sibling forms, FA forms, things like that…it might take a few days to post but it’s helpful. I always wonder if a certain item was received.

I think you do have to re-enroll, this is my first year, and I have to catch up a month.
I have used afford.com with other schools and it was easier because they have their own website and re-enrolling and keeping track is easy, but Yale isn’t part of their colleges. (enrollment fee was cheaper also)

It does say on the site a confirmaton email will be sent. I would call to make sure, they are always helpful.

my2sunz: When I tried to re-enroll, I got a blank page after filling the form and pressing next. I immediately called the financial office and was transferred to Cindy who said there is some security glitch with the last update of adobe. She completed the form over the phone and submitted. The next day I got a confirmation email from YPP. You can also check the ACS website using the same login information from last year.

To find information about billing and charges first click on either parents or students, then financial services, and last students accounts.

lillymom: That is exactly what happened to me. I’ll give a call to the business office tomorrow.
Thanks for the help, guys.

I will wait a few days to see if they have the “glitch” fixed. The is my LAST YEAR for college payments (unless D1 decides to go to med school, then we might help a bit with that) and I will celebrate that 10th payment! Can’t believe how quickly the time has gone by. . .

Our student got a mailing/solicitation for a bedding package etc…which had Yale all over the labeling.

Just recently got an email from Yale stating that the solicitation which was sent to the incoming freshman was not from Yale, nor sanctioned.

So how did this business get my student’s info when all of the forms and releases for publication of information aren’t even due yet to the offices?

First S headed to NH for his first year so all is new (and somewhat confusing) to us (me). We submitted the FIS on time but have not heard anything about an updated or ‘final’ aid package for 11-12. When are those sent?

We got bills in July, August, on last year statements for my daughter. I remembering going back to compare how the package changed as we dropped things like insurance or took out a loan.

We just got the FA package for our returning sophomore a couple of weeks ago and they usually update monthly. Unlike some other colleges they don’t send emails, etc. in-between usually.

Well today the link for the new class of 2015 to get their roommates.dorm and re college assignment was to go live at noon.
Kiddo is out of town and will hopefully clue us in on the big news … we are resisting peeking :)

S was extremely disappointed in his residential college assignment. Are these ever appealed/changed? Any veterans here know?

Anyone know if typical floor plans for any of the dorm suites are available to look at ? My S found out he is in Lanman-Wright Hall. Just to get an idea of what kind of space you have.

babbobubba–I seriously doubt you can change residential colleges. I can see being momentarily disappointed, but there is no reason be extremely disappointed. Your son should give himself today to mourn and then move on. He will most likely become passionately loyal to his college.

IBP–The bedrooms in L-W are very small. There are two bedrooms and a common room in each suite unless you’re on the 5th floor where there are large bedrooms shared by two students. If memory serves, L-W has the smallest rooms on campus, but the location is excellent.
