Yale Parents thread

A parent survey was sent out–check your spam folder.
It is several sections, about fin aid, your perceptions of the value of a Yale education vs the cost, your perceptions of the quality of the education…campus environment, purposes of the education etc.
Also has 2 free response sections about fin aid and one for “other issues”.

Yale also sent out a questionnaire to incoming parents by email after BDD to hear what we thought of the event and our experience.

D graduates from Yale this weekend. She had a wonderful time. I appreciate all the Yale info on CC. Thanks.

Other than the obvious benefit of not having to make big lump-sum payments, can anyone speak to the pros or cons of this manner of paying the bills? Does it usually work smoothly?

Any general advice about financial record-keeping and mistakes to avoid (for next year’s taxes and financial aid forms) would also be gratefully received by this slightly overwhelmed parent.

Many thanks!

My advice is if you or your student owes money for federal taxes make sure you pay it early so you can avoid delays in using the IRS retrieval for FAFSA. That will be important in getting your financial aid award timely.

I have been reading this thread very sporadically, but I didn’t get any survey from BDD (and yes, I just checked my spam folder quite carefully). It makes me very nervous about what other communications I’m not receiving from Yale.

My son is a rising sophomore and I did not receive any survey either (nothing in spam folder). Was this sent to incoming freshman or all students?

IJD,
Do not worry-we parents have not received any other communications from Yale.
It seems that everything is going to D…
Hey- another opportunity for her to foul the nest by screwing that up! (the student has to do a variety of things by a variety of due dates…)
p.s. I will keep you posted here of anything we do receive- can you please do the same?!

I’m not sure if the survey was sent to everyone; I got it, but I thought it said I was “selected randomly” or some such thing. I’ve now deleted it so I can’t check.

I don’t recall getting a survey, either, but a big envelope full of forms came for my daughter yesterday.

About Health Insurance

Can anyone who has Blue Cross and Blue Shield PPO talk about if it has any problem at Yale?

Hunt, the survey came via email (from Richard Levin) and said we were selected randomly. So, I don’t think it went to everyone. It was mostly questions about finances and financial aid, but there was a place for comments at the end.

I have BC/BS PPO and mentioned some of my problems with YHP in a prior message. There are some primary care services offered to all insured students who waive the YHP coverage but for the purposes of specialty care (ie. orthopedics, dermatology, ophthalmology) the YHP is an HMO and you will need to go over to Yale New Haven Hospital or a local doc outside the plan since they are not well set up to bill for services and if they do, it falls outside of the PPO coverage. Maybe they will apply half of the charge to your deductible.

It sounds like the survey only went to selected families receiving financial aid. I guess Yale doesn’t care about the opinions of those of us who pay full freight.

wjb, I received the survey, and we are paying the tuition ourselves. The survey asked about the sources we are drawing upon to do so, among other questions.

We already have a kid there, which may explain why we didn’t get it.

Pleeze. We are full pay as well and I got the survey. No need to get up-in-arms about anything.

^It takes a lot more than not being included in a survey to get me up in arms.

I should have used a smiley face.

:)

It’s not about being up in arms, it’s about being paranoid that we’re not receiving some other important information. If you received the packet in the last few days with instructions on how to pay, that’s the important thing.

watchthis, Sorry your post got buried back a ways! Congratulations to your D on her graduation from Yale! Hope you enjoyed all the wonderful commencement activities, and wish all the best to you and your D! I was recalling just today how we were bursting with pride just two years ago when oldest S graduated–but it felt bittersweet as well to have such a great chapter of his life (and ours) end!
