Yale Parents thread

DS does get science majors a later start but presumably this is made up by the fact that social science, humanities, and writing credits are all fulfilled by the time it is completed. Non-DS science majors will likely have to take some of these courses over the next few years when the DS alum can catch-up. Some of the lateness can be attenuated by taking requisite intro science and math courses as a fourth (or fifth) course in a freshman semester.

I have a question regarding the linens mailing we just received. Do many people order sheets from this service? If we choose to buy our own sheets, are all beds extra long twins?

I assume that extra long twins won’t be hard to find, since there are so many college students buying them.
?
Thanks.

No, I have never ordered sheets for either of my two students (only one attends Yale). The beds are Twin XL so you shouldn’t have problems finding sheets for them. I would also recommend a mattress pad and eggshell foam as the beds are not that comfortable.

My daughter’s starting her second year so I got that linen mailing last year. I was tempted but did some research and it seems a lot of people complained (not specifically from Yale, but about that company) that the quality didn’t match the price–scratchy, thin, etc. So we bought stuff at BB&B (sheets) and a nice comforter from somewhere on-line (perhaps Company Store). BB&B has plenty of XL sheets to choose from.

Last year Yale sent out a mailing that one of the linen offers we got was NOT from Yale…
Some business - somehow had gotten the names of incoming freshmen…

Frankly Xlong sheets are easy to come by–Target, BB&B, etc…

Thanks for the sheet advice. My gut was telling me not to order, but just to buy from a regular store. Nice to have this confirmed.

Has anyone received their financial aide packets yet? Would be nice to know for planning purposes! Can’t remember when we got them last year.

@EAO1227, as a matter of fact I was planning on calling them tomorrow. We had to wait for my son’s IRS retrieval (since he owed they didn’t process it until he paid and I set it to automatically withdraw on 4/13) so the target date was this past Monday for getting the award notice. As of yesterday it still hadn’t posted to SIS. You can bet the bill will be there by July 1st though. ;)

@ EAO1227 and Kdog044: I would definitely call, as we received my son’s financial aid award almost a month ago on May 30th. He is a rising sophomore. BTW: If you go to Yale’s Term Bill (<a href=“Central Authentication Service | Yale University”>Central Authentication Service | Yale University) and select recent activity, you should be able to see the billable items as they were posted on June 21st.

You probably made the original deadline for turning in the required paperwork. As I indicated, we had my son’s IRS retrieval outstanding until a month after his payment date (around May 11th) so we didn’t meet the April deadline.

Gibby, should the amount of money billed in the “Recent Activity” add up to half of the Total Family Contribution or half of the Total Cost of Attendance?

Half the Total Cost of Attendance. They have yet to post scholarship credits, though I suspect that should happen prior to the July bill.

Thank goodness. I saw the amount billed to my account and flipped out for a moment, knowing that there’s no way my parents could reasonably pay that much.

Somehow I have the recorrection that the scholarship credits could be posted (i.e., I mean being actually credited to your account here) much LATER THAN the July bill. But it does not matter. Even though the scholarship credits are posted later, it is OK if the tentative scholarship plus your balance is above zero on the due day of the bill. (I think the first year I saw it, I got nervous also.)

I could be wrong though as it has been a while.

The IRS data retrieval tool seems to be something new this year, at least its mandatory part.

For what it is worth: we received a “snail mail” copy of the financial aid packets just yesterday (Monday). (But our child is not an UG student so the timing could be different for an UG, as the packet comes from a different FA office which is tiny as compared to UG’s one.)

Hello!

Any others assigned to Davenport College? And, more specifically, does anyone have a link to the dorm layout in Welch?

I called financial aid this morning and they said the date was wrong on that area of the web site. It was supposed to say June 29th so if you didn’t meet the original deadline in April then the notice will be posted this Friday.

NOTE: For those of you who didn’t know this, the IRS retrieval is a new requirement for this year and moving forward. If you or your student owe IRS any money, the return will NOT be processed until after you make payment. Typically that is about 4 weeks after the posted paid date. If you want to make the early deadline for your paperwork, do not delay in making your payment. We set up the payment to deduct on 4/13 not knowing it would affect the processing on my son’s return which was completed in early February. :o

Your best bet is Facebook. I know my son found a Morse 2015 (he’s in Morse of course) site and was able to find pics from different class years. Especially search for the college and class year (i.e. Davenport 201X).

Thanks Kdog! We’re trying that now :)

I called finaid yesterday and they said they will be sending out emails in the next couple of days; they are doing final checks of the numbers now. The school filed a correction to kiddo’s FAFSA on Monday, so something is happening… Although all our required documents were in last February, we also had an issue with the tax retrieval tool.

The June 25 date was also in the letter sent by the school on Feb. 6, so I doubt the web posting was a mistake … more like an overly optimistic estimate.

Kdogg, thanks, nothing yet, we had a tax issue, someone used my SS# for tax purposes and so we had to file in with paper, took longer and so everything was delayed. Also older son took a year off and College has not readmitted for financial purposes so everything is messed up. Will call Monday and hope for the best! Thanks for the information. Will let you all know when I do. BTW, daughter was at Yale for a summer school/program and said it was amazing, concerts on the green, relaxed undergrads etc… said it confirmed her choice of Yale as the place to be!!!
