I agree, re the microwave, it’s not really needed.
I know the article is old, but I’m pretty sure my daughter used them when she was a freshman. She said she used them on occasion but prefered her own detergent because of allergies.

There is a grocery store…a bit of a walk…I forget the name, yet if you go to google maps and use the search function you will find it.
That said, with the great food options and the dining halls at every RC, and places on Science Hill etc…there is little need in the freshman dorms etc.
I would think that a Walgreens etc as mentioned might have a few items.

I agree the microwave is not really needed. I think my son used it for making hot chocolate and popcorn – and that’s it!

Thanks to all for the helpful info re: food shopping. Durfees and GHeaven look amazing!

Any other tips for move-in?

Move-in at Yale is extremely well organized. When you pull up your car, about 20-30 upperclass students will unpack your student’s belongings and take them to his or her room. Parents don’t have to do any of the heavy lugging – which is so helpful! If you arrive before noon, you can spend 2 to 3 hours helping your child get settled in, and then around 3pm there is a reception at the master’s house, where your son or daughter can meet other students and you can mingle with other parents. It all goes very smoothly.

The grocery store is Stop&Shop on Whalley Ave, one or two blocks pass the Marriott Courtyard.

Is move-in equally efficient for freshman living in college?

Yes move-in happens the same way for Silliman and TD. Very quick and efficient, and your car is empty and ready to be moved to a parking lot within minutes of arrival. They have big wheelbarrows that they use to move the stuff. (I just wish that the other three years had such service! We’ll be on our own this time around!)

My D’s belongings were in her room before she returned from FOOT. We parked, unloaded, her stuff was moved into her room and we waited on Old Campus for her to return from FOOT.

Talk about efficient!

If you are moving in to Old Campus make sure you have a nice tower fan and set that up first thing or you will roast in the dorm. HINT: make sure you have a screwdriver or whatever is needed to assemble it.

Thanks everyone! We are looking forward to an easy move-in and will definitely be bringing a tower fan with us!

Donnaleighg: we’ve heard a rumor that TD has A/C - is that true, or should we be bringing a tower fan, too?

I don’t think TD has any A/C. Certainly not in E entrance where my daughter was.

Anybody know if Durfee has overhead lighting?

That would be a no. There is no lighting in either the suites or the common room so make sure a standing floor lamp is on the list of items to bring.

Dropping off frosh at Welch Hall with the usual plus a 33" refrigerator. I read of the swarms of helpers that meet you curbside and make moving in a breeze but how does that work with an under-counter refrigerator? I was planning on bringing my own hand truck to bump it up to the fourth floor if necessary.

You probably know this, but you can rent refrigerators that are then brought to the room and you don’t have to deal with storing it in the summer. I think getting it up four flights will be tough.

Read the negatives on this site about rental co. ie old items/difficult coordinating delivery/replacement.
Cost to rent 1 year + $10 delivery is more than to buy from WalMart (delivery is free).
Some dorms allow summer storage??
We had the refrigerator to contribute and live locally so we can store it if necessary.
I get it out of my garage!

Kdog - thanks for the info! D1 will be thanking you too.
