Yale Parents thread

Thanks for all the helpful info in this thread! A few questions about summer storage: I recall reading somewhere that each kid can store a number of boxes in the summer. Do they specify box size? Would you recommend buying plastic bins? Are the items secure? What about footlockers?

Waiting to hear from the experts here :)

To give you an idea on timing–here is how our day rolled out

Dropped K1 off at OldCampus (who walked to pick up keys while we circled block to get vehicle in line) K1 met us in front of bldg (we parked vehicle for unloading) as soon as the unloading brigade began.
Lots of upper classroom swarmed the car and everything was in the room in a matter of minutes.
Moved car.
Assessed needs: Ran to Walmart to pick up pre-arranged fridge and supplies. Everything was in the dorm shortly after noon. Dropped stuff off at dorm. K1 ran to Post office for keys.

We took a tour of campus since DH and K2 hadn’t been there–and K1 and the roommate did some unpacking, meeting kids etc.
We pocked up a snack at tent on Old Campus—( bring cash) while K1 did other things…I think also technology appt, I don’t recall.
Met K1 at Old Master’s tea…met roommates parents…K1 left for other events with new friends.
Later we met k1 for a quick supper (6-7ish) before the required freshmen meetings began.

Saturday am: Went to the Convocation. Skipped Pres meet/greet at librarey and instead walked back to Old Campus/K1s dorm for a few minutes. Went to lunch at RC.
K1 left for next required meeting and we left for the airport (got last flight out before hurricane shut down airport).

Yale move in goes really smoothly.
And the fro-cos have the kids busy and plugged in right away.

All this is to say you will be surprised to have everything done pretty early in the day–and it seems the kids all hang out, unpack etc without parents–so your drop off job will be easy.

Re summer storage, your froco and RC Master will give you those details later. It is likely varied among the RCs. The # of boxes is limited. You could peruse the info your froco sent to see if it is mentioned as well as the freshman handbook etc…and through your portal link may find more info on the website.

Definitely not worth attending. The one not to miss is the Freshman Assembly (dress light as there is no air conditioning). I would also recommend attending the Master’s Open House if you are able to.

jtstcm,

This may help.

[YCC expands summer storage program | Yale Daily News](http://www.yaledailynews.com/news/2012/apr/03/ycc-expands-summer-storage-program/)

I’d like to go to the Master’s Open House, but it is scheduled right in the middle of move-in day and we have stores to get to. Since they have the kids scheduled that night for academic advising, I’m not sure it’s doable, but I’ll try. I am planning to skip the President’s House this time. DS saw it at his sister’s graduation and I remember a very long line during move-in with my daughter. Again, there is so little time for running errands, assembling stuff, etc. I am using all my suitcase space for moving DS’s stuff. I wasn’t really planning to bring anything but shorts, cool shirts and athletic shoes. Would it be awful to show up to an Open House that way? I can’t see running back to the hotel to change.

The Open House is very informal so shorts and a polo or something similar would be fine. It’s nice because you can meet the Master and Dean of the student’s residential college. Plus they usually have alcohol and some nice appetizers. ;)

kdog44 and fogfog… THANKS!

Loving the details – This is so helpful!

For those who would rather not fly their music gears or music sheets, etc., to campus:

 1. Neighborhood Music School and Foundry Music Co are located in the Audubon Arts District of downtown New Haven. (They are very close to Yale’s UCS. At least this was the case a couple of years ago.) I think their addresses are 100 and 102 Audubon Street, respectively. They are within the walking distance from the campus.
 2. There is a Guitar Center on the Boston Post Road Orange. What is even better, as I learned from DS, is that a bus stop is very close to this store. So it is accessible even if your loved one does not keep a car. (It took DS a couple of years before he started to use the public transportation system and the zip car though. He used to rely on Yale’s minibus only. Sometimes his friend or friend’s parent gave him a ride to such a “distant” place.)

I really enjoyed the Masters Open House - and would try to attend if I were you. Actually meeting the Master gave a face to the name, and I think he appreciated meeting as many parents as he could. He has always remembered us (or so it seems!) when we visit.

Do not miss the Freshman Assembly (lovely traditions in a gorgeous hall and some good speeches). We couldn’t even get into the door of the lunch with the President at Commons so we skipped that.

We did our shopping early morning at Target before DS even returned from FOOT. That left more of the day open for other activities. He and his suitemates did their own run to IKEA for furniture the next day after parents were gone - good bonding I think!

Well I just found that if you have your S or D log in to poboxes.usps.com they will see their PO box number and will then have it before they get their in person.

Thanks fog and kdog for the details. Ooohh, I’m liking the decription of the Masters open house: shorts, appetizers and alcohol!

There was no problem having time for an IKEA run and assembly and we did attend all the scheduled parent events. Agree with the others that the President’s reception is the one to miss since it is just a long receiving line with punch and bad cookies. I don’t recall it being quite as long as two hours as others have said.

I mentioned this earlier but remember to bring some common tools since you will likely buy stuff that needs assembly. I would suggest one of those $15-20 basic starter sets with a hammer, screwdrivers, tape measure that you can leave with your kid for future years. DS desk had no drawers so he needed something to store papers, other supplies, etc. and I got him a small rolling file cabinet with some drawers and a book case at IKEA which were invaluable.

Thanks so much for this very helpful info!

Okay, I will try to get to the Masters Open House. Thanks. Super casual is all I am bringing as all suitcase space is being used to transport DS’s stuff. I’m just putting a few things on a carry-on for myself. I am just hoping for decent weather. The last move-in I did at Yale was with extreme heat and humidity and it really made everything so much harder. I was so surprised when I came to NH in August before my DD’s senior year and it was beautiful and cool. What a difference it makes.

The high point of the President’s reception is seeing the amazing art collection in that house.

YaleGradandDad – how bad was Ikea on move-in day? I’m a little terrified at the thought of braving the crowds.

Student info packet says that “proper attire should be worn” to the Freshman Assembly. For boys, does this mean jackets and ties? Polos and khakis? And what about the parents? Thanks for the guidance. The countdown is on…

S received a very nice email this week from from his RC Dean which included:

“If you plan to delay the process of unpacking your belongings (on Friday), let me recommend that you take time to find some nice clothes now and pack them in such a way that you can easily retrieve them on Saturday morning, when you will be attending the freshman assembly, a formal event that calls for dressy attire.”

I don’t think I can bring a jacket and tie for me since his Mom and I are trying to limit ourselves to one carryone for both of us to share to maximize what we can bring on the plane for S. We are hoping that just slacks and a nice shirt will be “dressy” enough for those of us in the Family sections?

Ikea looked like it does at my local one on a weekend - more crowded than I would like but doable. For the two items we bought I can’t think of a better alternative.

The Freshman assembly had boys wearing all of the above (adults too). No one is going to turn you away for improper dress but people do change out of the casual stuff they wear to move-in and set up their dorms.
