Yale Restricted Early Action Class of 2030 Official Thread

D26 got deferred and Yale is still her favorite. Good news is that after EA application she advanced as semifinalist for both Morehead-cain and Robertson scholarship. We are happy for her. Progression in those highly competitive scholarship can serve as external validation. But the programs are related to specific universities. Wonder whether D26 should update to AO about her scholarship progression in LOCI without confusing AO that she is inclined to another school. Any comments?

I would not since it is specific school related. Also, I don’t think even finalist means much to them. last year, some girl I know was the finalist of Roberson Scholarship and got rejected / waitlisted almost every single RD school….

Mentioning scholarship to other schools in a LOCI to Yale will not help your case. In fact, it may even be detrimental. I wouldn’t do this.

Wow, thanks!

I second this.

@BKSquared Hello! Do you know what happens with the interviewer if a candidate is deferred? Do they ever ask for more information? Or does the process end when the interviewer submits the report. Do you find out if they were denied, deferred or accepted? Do they ever ask for more information? Should my kid send their LOCI to their interviewer too? My kid just finished all of the other apps and is back to thinking about Y, their top choice still. Thank you so much for any info

Yale advises interviewers of deferred candidates not to contact them; as far as I know, the admissions office will reach out to deferred candidates or their schools if they need more information.

Our report is the only thing we provide. We are informed of the admissions decision (A, R, Def and WL) of our interviewees. Your student should send a LOCI directly to admissions. Best of luck.

Congrats on moving on. It is very competitive. That being said I think the LOCI needs to be about how the admissions office can see your DS as a member of the Yale class of 30 not as a Morehead Cain scholar

Thank you very much. That was very helpful. And thank you again for always sharing your wisdom.

Thank you for responding. My student did let the interviewer know about the deferral – just politely, asking for nothing – and got a polite but uncharacteristically terse reply. Now I understand why based on what I’ve read about the caution for interviewers not to engage with deferred candidates. Fingers crossed (but also working other schools too!)

Deferred daughter just submitted her LOCI, and I was just wondering if you had any idea what acceptance rates look like for deferred students? She did have an interview, and the interviewer actually reached out to her regarding her deferral with kind encouragement. The other student at her school who received an interview was a double legacy, with similar stats, and was admitted. I know it’s still statistically low anyway from a pure acceptance rate sense but curious if getting deferred and at least hitting that threshold for an interview, etc, holds any antecotal weight in admissions. Thanks for any insight!

I guess we can look at it this way. There were 779 acceptances of which around 200 were athletes or other strong hooks. So call it 570 unhooked got in plus 1,285 deferred (18% of 7,140). That makes your daughter in the top 25-27% of REA applicants (a stronger pool than RD). Assume 43,000 RD applicants, the top 15-20% would be about 6,500 to 8,500. So what we have left roughly are 8,000 to 10,000 students competing for about 1,400 spots (2,300-900).

That’s an interesting way to look at it. I do remember when the REA acceptances came out, there were 125 Questbridge, and if you assume 10%+ Legacy, we are already at 200 without athletes (daughters school has one athlete too). Hopefully there is some additional weight given to the fact that Yale was her REA choice versus all the RD students who likely applied to many ivies. Anyway, sounds like she has a higher chance than just the regular acceptance rate of 4% or whatever it is. She pretty much doesn’t think she has a shot, so it would be super fun if she got an acceptance. Thanks for taking the time to respond! EDIT: I see in a previous post that Questbridge isn’t included in the acceptances, so ignore that part - ha!

When you say ā€œstrong hooksā€, what does that encompass? recruited athlete, URM, rural, FGLI, elite int’l competition winner, faculty relative, legacy, donor’s kid, celebrity’s kid, top feeder school, etc.? (I’m sure I’m missing some). I feel like there are so many categories now that could be considered to be strong hooks. Also I’m just curious where your 200 estimate comes from/how confident you are in it. Thanks!

Pretty confident there are about 200 recruited athletes a year. Strong hooks for these purposes are kids who are on a different admissions track, e.g. ā€œdevelopmentā€ kids (donors, celebrities). 200 maybe low. Not counting things like legacy or ā€œsparse areaā€ or super qualified award winners. URM is no longer allowed. Questbridge also its own animal, so I took them out of the percentage calculations but included them in spots remaining.

I have heard 200 recruits at Yale also, but my info is several years out of date.

An athletic recruit may also be a legacy, but legacy is not a strong hook the way development is. I agree that 200 may be low for the # of spots spoken for among the SCEA population, but I think it would be difficult for us to quantify.

Any comments on the timing of LOCI submission? Thinking of end of Jan when the mid year report is available. Thx

hi @Boston_bao ! i was deferred rea last year and from previous advice (i think on old threads in college confidential?) i submitted mine early february. It was kind of late because I was waiting for a competition result, so I think end of jan is a good decision—i recently saw my admissions file and the committee re-reviewed my application for the RD cycle mid-february. honestly i think anytime before then would be fine.

hopefully this helps! i also wanted to say good luck to everyone here and thank you so much to the people who have been here for a while!!! the fall 2025 early admissions thread was so comforting and helpful and i seriously don’t know how i would have made it through without it.
