i hear you. for some people it’s so easy, because they’ve had a ‘thing’ that they’re into since they were kids that they’ve developed a love for and involvement in. for others, it’s sometimes hard to find a niche, so to speak.

you’re applying SCEA, alamode? or regular? I’m still debating cos I’m taking the ACT in October, so yeah… i feel bad that we’ve hijacked fedorfan’s thread. does anyone else have an example of what they would consider a quirky hook or EC?

i was a secretary general of 2-day South East Asia Conference in which about 250 delegates participated. I was in charge of preparation, the actual running of the conference, general assembly debating and etc.

Assuming you have the grades, strong curriculum, and standardized test scores to make it over the first threshold, certainly a gold medal (or any medal or earning some form of honor or recognition) in a recognized national/international competition, either an academic competition or an EC-related competition (e.g., fine or literary arts) is a great benefit. But it has to be a competition that’s known to admissions officers. First prize in an international competition run by an entity that no college admissions officer has heard of will not help significantly.
