my sat was a 1450
I believe your sonâs application has been read.
Your sonâs chances may be impacted by the lower Yale yield rate from your high school last year, which was below 30% (2 out of 7, or 28%). In comparison, Yale had a relatively high yield rate of about 70% last year.
Typically, in preparatory schools, counselors aim for a balanced distribution of applications among students to avoid clustering at one top-tier school.
MIT has a cut off score? This is the first place I read about this. Can you share what that number is?
I believe this is incorrect. MIT themselves do not state anything in their website. Iâve been able to find people online who state 1500 is a âhard cutoffâ statistically, but itâs not confirmed.
I stand corrected. I was pretty sure there was a 1500 hard cutoff and Iâd read it so many places that I thought that was published by MIT, but now I see that it wasnât. MIT was about the first school to reinstate test requirements after Covid.
Thank you folks. A hard cut off would have actually been easier to deal with.
Your son will land at an amazing school. Like my mother told my daughter today , â Yaleâs lossâ.
My Son got rejected, US citizen applied from India. He has top scores at IB school (top 1%), SAT and won so many science fairs including ISEF. Can someone share the profile of kids that got accepeted. Thanks
I am trying to picture the process of deferred versus RD applications. I tried to find info online but really couldnât find anything. I donât think itâs that transparent. So do the deferred applications get to go back to the start line and go through all phases of admission again? Or do they join the RD pool at a certain point? Of course we are clinging a bit on the deferral chance. Even if low. Being and competing in a bigger pool now is kind of discouraging but we are still hopeful. Of course my child thinks now they are not good enough and the hard work didnât pay off. We applied to other schools some that are safeties. But who knows these day if safeties are even a given.
Deferred apps are now part of the RD pool where those apps will have the benefit of additional reads. As always, admission will primarily be driven by institutional priorities.
Let them have a day or two to reflect/mourn the deferral and then move on. Admissions decisions are not personal. Hard work benefits the student no matter where they go to college.
Safety schools generally are auto admit based on stats (as opposed to holistic admission) and/or have high acceptance rates in general or from oneâs HS. Make sure your student has applied to at least one affordable safety school they would be happy to attend.
Just reread the portal and it does say âyour application will receive another complete review in RD.â

I think my strongest asset was my essays. I showcased how my background growing up in small-town Appalachia, love of reading, and interest in history influenced my passion for architecture, specifically the historic preservation avenue.
My interview was with a Yale senior and only lasted 20 minutes. There are no Yale alumni in my area that I know of; I come from a very underserved area where not many high schoolers even go on to college.
I had problems with IDOC and am still waiting for my financial aid to make a decision, but I am thrilled at the chance to be a Bulldog!!
Congratulations! Yale alum here, and Yale will be lucky to have you. I hope your aid package is everything you need it to be. Good luck!
wait let me know your updates on IDOC haha. I filed for a W-2 appeal because my family doesnât have one and so I never got aid.
I called their financial aid office twice yesterday and they told me that IDOC is having its own separate issues. Yale is just now receiving documents submitted November 15, because IDOC is so backed up on processing. I am probably going to just print off my forms and mail them in.
For those that got deferred. Does Yale care for LOCI (letter of continued interest)? Again, I did my own research but again got conflicting information.
There is one article from Yale dated 2016 about deferrals, so I am unsure how up-to-date it is. It does not answer the LOCI question.
But a part reads: For the most part, we have what we need. Weâll get your mid-year grades from your school counselor to see how youâre doing in your senior year classes, and if you want, you can send us one letter of update to let us know what youâve been up to since November 1st.
Maybe I missed some more updated information about LOCI. Any information is appreciated. Thanks.
Wondering same thing, how to handle. Appreciate the guidance.
D23 was deferred last year. She sent in her LOCI, as she had an update, in Jan. We got an email from FA a day after that (with the SID) requesting more info, and a few changes in the portal. In the end: rejected. But she found her dream school during the process. So I am sure every kid here, whether they get into Yale or not, will find their dream school and love it! Best wishes to every one of you.
I hope my sonâs application was read, but now I really doubt it. Last night I listened to this interview with Yaleâs director of admissions:
The guy not only says that test scores are the most important factor, he says that they must be seen relative to the school where theyâre from. So my sonâs 34 would have been OK if he went to a HS where the average ACT was 25, but itâs totally unacceptable at an elite school.
He also says that they donât spend a lot of time on scores, but itâs the first thing that they quickly look at and then move on. That sounds a lot like screening and throwing apps aside.
Itâs too late to game the tests now, but would have been easy to do â just need to put the time in. Our prep school said that schools were figuring this out and putting less emphasis on these tests for this reason, but clearly that isnât the case at Yale.
I wish we had known about this, I feel really bad that my son wasted so much time on that application.
Thanks. Did your D23 have new school/EC related information to share in the LOCI or was it more about that she is still interested in Yale?
