<p>New Haven is a urban environment, with all the good and bad that comes with it. You need to take precautions in any such environment such as not walking around alone at night, etc. If you are from a big city such as NY, Boston, DC, Baltimore, etc., New Haven will seem very non-threatening. If you are from a rural environment or a very small town, it may be a little more iffy.</p>
<p>I remember at my tour over 35 years ago, one of the moms was concerned about the amount of traffic the students had to deal with going from place to place on campus. Being from Washington, DC, I remember my mom and I just looking at each other and shaking our heads.</p>
<p>Yale has the usual safety procedures: blue light system, transport after dark, keyed entry into residential colleges and buildings. Be aware and be safe is the motto, but that should be the case where ever you attend college or just in your everyday life.</p>
