My daughter got into ASE 3. She’s very excited!
Might I ask, to those who were accepted early, were many of you international students?
I got in for ASE III and I’m an international student from Paraguay!
@mim2478 congrats!!!
did you get any financial aid?
@carpediem1234 I’m an international student and it seems a lot of the other students in this thread are too, but according to the YYGS Instagram, the percentage of international and domestic students is about 50-50 for this round.
My daughter got accepted into yygs for bbs yesterday. Extracurricular were public speaking and karate
I got in PLE I with full financial aid and Young Leader scholarship, which will cover all the travel costs to Yale. I am astonished now!
DM me if you want to look over my essays and activity lists for inspiration.
I tried to dm you but can’t do it for some reason?
@Rijul Yes I did! I’m going with the Young Leader Scholarship, that covers 100% of the tuition. I still can’t believe it
@ 95042062qww Do you mind sharing your activity list and essays? I tired to dm you but it didn’t work for some reason.
@cici18 sure!
I applied to ASE III and was accepted (yayy!), I can’t wait to meet you guys in July!
Demographics:
International student living in China
Asian
Didn’t apply for aid
Stats:
PSAT - 1370/1520, I took it again this year and they marked my answers with the wrong answer key, but I suspect I got around 1500?
SAT - 1540/1600
My school doesn’t calculate GPA, I got all A*s last semester though.
ECs:
The ones I included on my app were organising STEM competitions for lower secondary students in my school and working on social projects that link to the UN SDGs like reducing single use (climate action) and reducing food waste (responsible consumption and production). After looking at some of the other activities on this thread I feel mine aren’t as impressive, so perhaps what got me in were my essays.
Essays:
For the 500-word one the main point was emphasising my passion for STEM and therefore my interest in ASE. I also tried to tie in how global citizenship is integrated in my everyday life.
I said I’d have dinner with Richard Feynman, a famous physicist, and I’d like to teach a course that covers realistic life skills (very unique, I know).
For the last one I focused on how playing the piano allowed me to become a more expressive person in everyday life or something along the lines of that.
Tips:
I agree with what someone else said earlier, be yourself and make sure it shows in the essays. I made sure my first essay had a strong STEM theme so it relates to the program I was applying to. This will make the app more coherent, I think. I literally wrote the essays in one or two days, it’s nothing to stress too much about, even if you’re not sure what to write, once you make a rough plan just type and type, and only start editing after you go over the word count ?
Good luck to you guys who were deferred and those who are applying RD!
@Jahin232 I think new members (see the flair next to your username) can’t PM others, you need to be a junior member (have 15 posts/threads) to be able to PM.
@Jahin232 Hey! On the third page, I wrote a post thoroughly discussing my ECs and essays. Check it out! Also, if you want to see my complete essays or something like that, feel free to leave your ig or email if that’s allowed.
I got into YYGS 2020 early for PLE first session! However, I may or may not go, it’s still too early to decide summer plans.
@swhs12 Yeah!!! I might be in PLE 1 as well. looking forward to know you.
@geekysandwich and other accepted applicants anyone willing to review my essay?
I got accepted into LPC II! Anyone else get into the same session? I’m so excited for the summer!

I saw some people worrying about YYGS having bias against a small school, but I also go to a small school (about 150 students in the whole high school), and no one has ever been accepted into YYGS before as well, so rest assured.
btw I applied to YYGS last year too but got waitlisted, so I’m not sure how helpful my info will be because I think theres a higher chance for people to get in when they apply again
stats:
TOEFL: 117 (9th grade score yet to retake)
SAT: 1510
3.9 GPA, a couple of A- for Chinese
Awards:
2 national level awards for Journalism, one individual, one for a team I organized
Harvard MUN China award
regional poetry and team basketball
ECs:
Leader of student media group in school, reported about local LGBT, facility problems within school etc. Developed leadership skills, time management, and self discipline
Student Council secretary
Varsity Basketball
Summer programs:
Iowa Young Writers studio online course
Stanford pre collegiate programs, journalism course
Essays:
500 word essay I focused mainly on redefining diversity, inclusion, and belonging because I feel that these words are thrown around too easily and limited to merely the physical congregation of people of different race. I talked about how YYGS brings people together spiritually and therefore allows the exchange of new ideas and why that’s important. I stressed the diversity of thought, and my interest in open conversations of opposite opinions. I also talked about my willingness to be part of a team and upbeat spirit (in other words, bs. The first half is true though.)
The course is called Intersection-- this is an extension on the topic of different ideas crossing paths because of increasingly polar ideologies within populations.
I wanted to dine with Celeste Ng, one of my favorite authors who writes about race, sex, family, and privilege issues, also within the Asian populations.
For influence, I talked about my father as a giver and how he has shaped my character.(cliche I know, but true and heartfelt)
Wish best of luck to those deferred/still applying!
Hey, I got accepted as an international student for ASE 3. Best of luck to everyone else for the regular decision!
