<p>jym–Nothing you said. I was just speaking about the general lack of respect seen on CC and elsewhere for jobs that do not have a high starting salary. People often talk here as if anyone who is not majoring in “engineering” or “business” is doomed to live on the streets. Or in their parents’ basement! :)</p>

<p>Congratulations! Those of us with 2009 grads know what an exceptionally difficult year it has been for landing jobs. I’m thrilled each and every time that I hear of another from this class that has landed a job.</p>

<p>What positive responses, and such great energy. I take your point Consolation–my oldest daughter, after a year in South Africa doing AIDS work, a year in Guatemala doing human rights work, and a year in Americorps is taking a masters in public health; the youngest as this thread stated is starting out in the human services field. Fortunately, my wife and I were able to save enough that they are starting out with no college debt–many students are not as fortunate and have accumulated such huge debts that out of necessity they will have to major in a field that will enable them to pay back their loans, although they would rather be in a more “humanistic field”. The girls realize, and express, how lucky they are.</p>
<p>Yes, my daughter will stay in Vermont, the job is only 30 minutes north of Burlington.
She will stay at home also, until she gets a little ahead of the game–but she is already thinking apartments and roommates.</p>
<p>Thanks for the nice words Woody. Your turn to “pass it on” to future students. My d. and I spent the weekend at the Jazz Festival in Montreal. Any future student who attends that incredible outdoor party (which opened with a huge free Stevie Wonder show) would choose McGill in a heartbeat.</p>
<p>Lets hear some other good news from parents, either a job or a new beginning or a wonderful college experience… Keep the good vibes flowing in at least one thread.</p>

<p>Huge congrats to her. As the parent of a 2009 Engineering grad, we have felt very fortunate that our S is quite gainfully employed… but it always seemed a higher likelihood for an Engineering kid. Doesn’t take away our pride and joy (and relief, lol). But in the cases of humanities and social sciences majors… this news is several orders of magnitude more exciting. Enjoy!</p>

<p>Tough year, yes, but my DD (BFA in Graphic Design) applied to maybe 30 places and wound up with 2 GD job offers by graduation. She also is living at home temporarily, with the hopes of paying off some college loans before going off on her own…</p>
<p>I am also very happy to read of your d’s success in the post-college world of jobhunting!</p>
<p>Oldest s graduated from college last year, and managed to land a very good job in computer science (his major). He’s still living at home, stockpiling money before he moves out.</p>
<p>Middle s is starting college this fall. He is a liberal artsie, with plans to major in political science or philosophy or history. Law school is the next step, but if that doesn’t happen, it’s nice to keep success stories like your d’s in the back of my mind!</p>

<p>Delighted by your good news! It is cause for celebration. DS was home for the July 4th weekend and invited over a group of his high school friends. Among these eight 2008 college grads, only he and two others are gainfully employed in their chosen fields; the rest are working as cashiers and waitstaff. DH and I keep our fingers crossed daily.</p>
