Yet another bedding question - is XL necessary for quilt?

Both kids took regular twin comforters for their X Long twin beds. Worked fine.

A full size comforter will not hang all the way down to the ground, even without risers. However, it will hide enough so that it’s not as much of an eyesore. However, kathiep is correct. Boys don’t care, and many girls don’t either. This is only the kind of thing moms think about.

I sent a nice new quilt and helped my son make up his bed when he was a freshman, and that was the very last time the quilt was ever on the bed! Two years later, it’s as good as new, safely sealed in the original plastic cover!

We put 2 cinderblocks under each bedleg (saw it at a different college and stole the idea for D’s room). This raised the bed high enough to slide the refrigerator, an extra set of drawers, and whatever else she wanted underneath. The fullsize quilt hid it all!

OK…anecdote. Prior to freshman year, a friend’s daughter talked to DS. She had graduated from the school he was attending. She said “you really will want to loft your bed so you can store out of season clothes and sweaters in boxes under your bed.” He really didn’t say much until we got into the car to go home. His comment to me “Mom…I don’t have ‘out of season’ clothes. I have ‘clothes’. AND I don’t wear sweaters.” He never lofted his bed and he didn’t give two hoots about it.

While you are shopping for the bedding, a good quality mattress topper will be much appreciated next fall. The dorm mattresses are not the comfy, padded variety you are probably used to at home.

housing site for my d specified that cinderblocks for lofting were forbidden - the school will provide lofting or you can buy risers - any cinderblocks found will be removed and the student charged $25/block…

The risers work fine and you can use multiple sets stacked up to get enough under bed clearance.

We used risers on D’s bed in her apt. They work great. Didn’t need in S’s dorms as those beds could be elevated some, although not totally “lofted” such that a desk could fit underneath. I think many of the dorms these days are going to these beds that can be adjusted upwards of a foot or so…

Don’t obsess with trying to decorate your college student’s room- boys don’t care and won’t use the stuff you buy, girls will want the fun of deciding for themselves. That said, be prepared to purchase the stuff they NEED because they won’t have a clue. Don’t plan on taking things from home they will use on the trips home- eg alarm clocks, fans, bedding… Also note, if Penneys is out of their navy blue XL sheet sets, they should have them again in August (they have better quality than most places)- it must be the most popular color, especially since boys like it and girls will choose many different colors.
