Yet Another Diet and Exercise Thread - need help

Good news/Bad news

The good news is that I qualified for racewalking at the senior nationals to be held next year in San Francisco. I crushed my previous best time by more than a minute for a 5K, so I was pumped. I did a 33:21 which is pretty respectable for that distance.

The bad news is that I have been just PIGGING OUT since my race. I have to get back to a more reasonable diet starting tomorrow. So, now that I have publicly (albeit anonymously) announced my backsliding I am hoping to re-assert my self control.

My first reaction on seeing this thread appear back up front was … dang. :o But congratulations on the upcoming race! That really is great. And you have a goal for your “shaping up.” (pun intended.)

Yes, Binx, but the nationals are a year away. That is a very long time to stay focused. In fact the whole system does seem flawed. Waiting a year from the state trials to nationals seems too long for our age…seems like we could lose a few.

Seriously, having typed my regression, I think I will be better starting tomorrow.

I started a great diet this morning. And yesterday morning. And the morning before that…

Then I get out of bed.

But seriously, my D leaves Thursday for Oregon, and I’m hoping to use the solitude to get back on track.

LOL…congrats on qualifying, that sounds like an amazing time for racewalking! And double LOL on the “getting out of bed” comment.
I too am backsliding a bit, better the last two days. Having all 3 children home and all in some aspect of transition mode has been really hard, and I too think I am eating from stress. Best wishes to all of us :(

Ditto on the backsliding. We did a college visit trip that forced me to eat three meals a day in restaurants for two days–I stayed on program day one but just abandoned all efforts by day two after the biscuits and gravy called to me at breakfast. While H managed to exercise while on the road, I decided it was a higher priority to keep S2 company in a power nap in the hotel room. Then our older son came home on Sunday from an 8-week stint abroad and we had a big celebratory feast basically all afternoon and evening. As a result, I was up 3 pounds on my week to week weigh-in and am still 1 pound higher than my low. I have only lost 4.5 pounds for the entire month.

On the good news front, I love my Garmin and am seeing improvement in my jogging. I am also completely back on track diet wise.

Binx - You are really a very funny person. I am thinking you could have a part-time gig doing stand-up on the road…

Well, at least as I have been sliding backwards I have been in very good company. The posts this a.m. have made me laugh out loud and have me ready to face the day.

Thanks all!

Good luck to all w/getting on track again! I’ve been neglecting my running/weight training but managed to get out for a run this a.m. Just got to hop back on the train! :-)

Btw, I don’t know if anyone else gets the ad that I do w/this thread? It reads “Are you heavy or healthy?” and has a picture of a woman w/incredible abs. That’s my motivation!!! :-)

I have a “learn audio recording” ad. I wonder if even CC knows some things are hopeless. :)

New day, new start!

I’m glad this thread was resurrected since my latest lab results showed that I’m pre-diabetic. I need to exercise and lose weight to get that blood sugar down, and hopefully my LDL, too.

I just signed up at my local hospital fitness center for a 12 week program. The program includes a fitness evaluation with an exercise physiologist, membership at the fitness center, twice a week sessions with a personal trainer, a one-on-one consultation with a nutritionist and 2 nutrition classes, 3 sessions with a lifestyle coach and a custom exercise and diet plan. I’m hoping that between all that, the support on this thread and some new healthy recipes on the Summer Recipes thread, I might be able to actually succeed this time.

My biggest obstacle is finding the time for the workouts and for shopping more frequently (since I’m using more fresh veggies, etc.). I work full time so I have to go to the gym after work, then come home and make dinner for the family at around 7:30 PM. It makes for a long day and it’s going to take some adjustment, but I know it’s time for a change.

By the way, my ad up above says “2008 Diet of the Year” as seen on Oprah!

Morning All! Just stopped in to say Hello! I am so proud of myself this morning!!! D1 is going in to work late this morning so I got up and went to work out by myself! Woohoo! Did 40 minutes on the treadmill. I also started working out with the Wii Fit. Hilarious! I was a little depressed when they made my Mii character heavier after my weigh in, Yikes!, but it is really fun and entertaining. I really have a lot of trouble with the Yoga balance things but I’m slowly improving! I leave for an out of town trip tomorrow so I hope I can stick with it. Good luck everyone and stay strong today!

I really want a Wii fit. I have heard such great things about it. It’s on my Christmas list. (And I need the Wii to play it on, too.) And I want Dance Revolution, too! If I’m going to embarrass my D by exercising in the family room, why not go all the way.

I gotta admit I’m liking the idea of the Wii fit, too, but another gaming system comes into this house over my dead body. But my family has circumvented that threat before and I’m still here, so who knows.

I am cautiously optimistic about my current attempt to get into shape. 5 weeks and I am still at it. The legs have been pleasantly tired. Keeping a workout journal seems to be helping me this time around. I take great satisfaction in writing down my “accomplishment” after each outing (even if I only manage a short one)!

But I’m taking today “off” as I’ve hit the pavement the past 3 in a row - a new record for me. Small victories - I’ll take 'em!

New day, new start, indeed. A good outlook. Maybe I’ll finally get my desk under control…

I hit the park walking everyday with my Mama Mia extras gang! I took about 4 weeks off due to a planned hospital visit for some repair. I am back and feeling fine. Next, when I can swim in a few weeks, I will hit the sea! I am two years out from a 40 pound weight loss and holding. BUT, I have to be so careful…it is fruits and veggies forever and forever. I only allow bread in the house that I actually bake. I am trying to figure out how to work with sourdough and whole wheat with carob syrup. Baked my first loaf today after getting the sourdough starter bubbling away and the bread tastes great but the loaf stuck to the bottom of the pyrex bowl that I cooked it in. Anyway, my arms got a great workout kneading!

I believe that it is time for my annual posting of the no-fail anti-stress diet:

The Non-Stress Diet

This diet is designed to help you cope with stress which normally builds up during the day.

Breakfast

1/2 Grapefruit
1 Slice Whole Wheat Toast, Dry
8 oz. Skim Milk

Lunch

4 oz. Lean Broiled Chicken Breast
1 cup Steamed Spinach
1 cup Herb Tea
1 Oreo Cookie

Mid-Afternoon Snack

Rest of the Oreos in the package
2 Pints Rocky Road Ice Cream
1 Jar Hot Fudge Sauce
Nuts, Cherries, Whipped Cream

Dinner

Loaves of Garlic Bread with Cheese
Large Sausage, Mushroom & Cheese Pizza
4 Cans or 1 Large Pitcher of Beer
3 Milky Way or Snickers Candy Bars

Rules For This Diet

If you eat something, and no one else sees you eat it, it has no calories.

When drinking a diet soda while eating a candy bar, the calories in the candy bar are cancelled by the diet soda.

When you eat with someone else, calories don’t count as long as you don’t eat more than they do.

Foods used for medicinal purposes NEVER count. Example: hot chocolate, brandy, toast, and Sara Lee Cheesecake.

If you fatten up everyone else around you, then you look thinner.

Movie-related foods do not have calories because they are part of the entertainment package and not part of one’s personal fuel. Example: Milk Duds, Buttered Popcorn, Junior Mints and Tootsie Rolls.

Cookie pieces contain no calories. The process of breaking the cookie causes calorie leakage.

Late-night snacks have no calories. The refrigerator light is not strong enough for the calories to see their way into the calorie counter.

If you are in the process of preparing something, food licked off knives and spoons have no calories. Examples: Peanut Butter on a knife and ice cream on a spoon.

Food of the same color have the same number of calories. Examples are spinach and pistachio ice cream, mushrooms and white chocolate.

Chocolate is a universal color and may be substituted for any other.

P.S. I TRULY BELIEVE the “calorie leakage” theory (see Rule 7 above)

If I were smart enough to post a link, I would - but in the meantime…

I noticed on Yahoo News that an exercise pill produced results in mice. Maybe I will wait until they perfect that little gem!

patient - okay, you had me going. First I thought, ugh - no way could I eat a piece of dry toast for breakfast every day, and I don’t like milk… Then I though, yeah right, I have to buy a bag of Oreos, and only eat one? … And then I laughed out loud. Thanks.

But you forgot a couple:

Food eaten standing up has no calories.

Food eaten off of someone else’s plate - calories are assigned to original owner.

Put D on a plane for Oregon yesterday morning. My plan was, she will be gone 18 days. I will be thin and beautiful when she returns. I remembered that goal all day - even through the bag of cookies and the Italian sub and cherry turnover from Arbys. Net result today: weight unchanged. (I consider that a good thing, considering.)
