We run the dishwasher when full, ie two or three times a week. I do like it VERY full because it’s a 1993 Maytag (repaired a few times)… I assume it uses lots more water than new models and want to minimize water waste. The nice thing though with this old Dw is that I rarely have to rinse any dishes, just scrape of any big bits of food.
The silverware goes into any available space in the bin, mostly handles up.
Just started here on timed electricity billing. Going to try the 2 hr delay tonight as I always run it around 5-6PM. We run it probably daily or every other as H cooks a lot. I tried the handles down method but I did not like grabbing the fork and spoon where you eat. Went back to handles up. It’s a kitchenaid about 5 years old. The best one I have ever had was a GE in the kids detached unit housing. It may be because it is smaller but it is excellent.
Also started with airdry when the electricity started timed. Really no problem as it is dry here anyway. Use Costco liquid cascade pro but I just realized it says on the machine use cascade platinum. Not sure of the difference but I have a large supply of Costco for now. Also, strangely I never used a rinse. Started this week. I cleaned out the filter first time in 5 years this week and honestly it really had very little in it.
I just had my husband remove and clean ours for the first time 2 days ago. And when I say first time, I mean I’m a 68 year old woman that has had a dishwasher of my own since I was 18 in my own home and never had I realized there was a filter that needed to be changed until I watched a Facebook reel last week!
My rental apartment has a perfectly good dishwasher but I don’t use it. I live alone and doing the dishes takes 10 minutes, tops, part of my bedtime routine.
I have two dishwashers and with just two of us I probably run them twice a week. Sometimes the 2nd doesn’t get run at all and begins to smell. They are the same model and installed at same time but they clean differently. I clean the filters when they look gross or smell. Use Finish tablets from Costco. I don’t put pots and pans in the dishwasher. Dawn for the handwashing.
One of my kids never uses her dishwasher.
I have no clue why.
I hate emptying the dishwasher.
I use the short cycle on my dishwasher when I need to use the same dishes for a course later in the meal…when having company. E.g. salad plates that will be later used for dessert.
And confession…for large gatherings like graduation picnics and the like…we use paper goods…and throw them away. We don’t wash the plastic eating utensils either!
We use the dishwasher only a few times a year, usually associated with some special event where we have more people over. It’s a great place to store things though!
With just H & I living here, it takes 3-4 days to fill. But he doesn’t rinse well and it can get stinky. But that’s not my issue…
We’re both passive-aggressive loaders. He’ll load it his (wrong ) way. I’ll move items to where they should be. He’ll move things I load to his way. Whoever turns it on wins.
I am happy that he’s cleaning up. We’ve agreed to disagree. He usually unloads so I really should let it go. Easier said than done.
My daughter discovered that different cultures have different dishwashing traditions. Her husband comes from one where dishwashers are often never used. She has brought him over to the dishwasher side now that they are in a newer apartment with a nice machine.
Our dishwasher has no filter. Supposedly it has some kind of grinder built in to flush excess food away with the water. One in a while I do find a clogged jet and clear it.
There’s a filter? Must go look. I don’t think I’ve ever cleaned a filter on any DW we’ve ever had. Maybe some don’t have them. But we completely rinse all items before putting them in the DW as we run it infrequently. What we forget to do is replenish the rinse aid dispenser.
My dream used to be to have two dishwashers. That way you don’t unload one dishwasher until the other one is full and ready to be washed. The same dishes mostly just keep going back and forth between the two dishwashers.
At this point this is just one the dreams that will need to wait until my next life.
I am the person who cleans the filter screen on the bottom of the dishwasher. As such, I tend to be careful about first quickly rinsing dishes before I put them into the dishwasher. I could not tell you what yuck I pulled out of the screen this past weekend, but it was not pretty.
