Issues arise when people who are renters of apartments in Paris try to sublet them through Airbnb. My friend owns an apartment in Paris and evicted her tenant when she found out that the tenant had the place listed on Airbnb, and she didn’t concern herself with the issue of anyone who had booked the place.
When a tenant sublets, they are violating the terms of their lease. I don’t know of any LLs that allow the property to be sublet without their approval. When I was in SF, one of the people in our hotel said she was renting her place out via airbnb and staying in the hotel, pocketing the difference! As a LL, I would find that person in violation of the lease and boot her out.
Lutetia? Closed for renovation now, but a beautiful, historic hotel with a great location. We were there maybe ten years ago. Our room was older but had a great view. The lobby was restored art deco. Best of all, there was live jazz every night. Sitting there with a cocktail or a coffee, it felt like we had stepped back in time. I think it is supposed to reopen before the summer.
Might come back too expensive. When we stayed there it want so bad.
@Lizardly, about 10 years ago (or maybe longer?), I took a trip to Paris with D1. I remember watching the film French Kiss with Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline about 5 or 6 times with her before we left because it had so many scenes in Paris.
We arrived to our room at the Lutetia and decided to go explore the neighborhood. When the elevator landed on the lobby level, the doors opened, and who was standing there but KEVIN KLINE. D1 and I could hardly believe it. We laugh about that to this day.
My brother works in the film industry and said Kevin was in Paris filming some scenes in the movie my bro was working on (The Pink Panther) at the time. Much of that film was actually filmed in Prague (where my brother happened to be when we made this trip), but some scenes were filmed in Paris.
We stayed at the Hotel Muguet in the 7th, located right near Invalides, easy walk to Champ De Mars, easy Metro access, several excellent restaurants close by, very helpful staff as we had driven into to Paris from our Normandy trip, left our luggage at the hotel, dropped our rental car and walked back to the hotel. They arranged for a shuttle/van that picked us up when we left directly to CDG. They have a sister hotel right down the street but cannot recall the name although it is on their website.
I have several friends who have always had good luck and no problems renting apartments. Older d and her boyfriend rented a studio apartment from air B & B in the Marais and had no issues at all. The hosts who lived in another apartment either in the same building or adjacent met them on arrival with keys and reviewed everything.
@Nrdsb4, I watched Notting Hill countless times before going to London.
I’m interested in St. Germain now that many of you recommend it. Keep the info coming! Thanks!
Although I recommended the 8th… you really can’t go wrong with St. Germain. (Though Isle St. Luis is nice too.)
What I did was go back through all the CC threads on Paris and made a list of hotels and also got some recommendations from friends. I put my dates in and made a list of prices. The Villa Madame came out ahead due to price and location but I found that there are many great choices.
We stayed at the Hotel Abbitial St Germain, based on a recommendation of a family member who had stayed there. Good location, comfortable (not luxury) rooms, tiny elevator, we also had the daily breakfast.

We stayed at this hotel (it was one of the very few options left due to the short notice and the fact that we picked the week of a major tennis tourney):

Absolute loved it! Walked all over town, to Louvre and even further.
I always stay in apartments in Paris because I like to feel residential and I prefer to be able to make coffee and enjoy items from the local patisserie in the morning. I especially like apartments with a little balcony to sit outside with coffee or a glass of wine. Even better, apartments with views of the eiffel tower over the rooftops
Never been in July, you probably need to look for AC and it will be very crowded during the summer with high season prices
Studio in great location below budget

A large percentage of apartments in Paris have no A/C resulting in the the August exodus.
If you are renting an apt, make sure there is A/C.
An AirBnB in the 19th.
Bunsen…I also stayed there! Loved it! We walked everywhere from there. We were lucky to have a friend who worked for Marriott and were able to getthe Friends and Family discount. Made the stay very affordable.
We stayed at a Palais Royal apartment. It was very close to the Louvre. I have also stayed around the Opera. The luxury stay was Four Seasons George V. I used my company’s discount rates to stay there.
I’d like to know what company gets corporate rates at Georges V at less than $300 a night (OP’s stated budget)!
My old company, a bank. It was on the approved list to stay. I paid less than 300/room, had to get 2 rooms for 4 of us.
@marvin100, tell me what you liked about the 19h. (I try to stay in different parts of Paris when I go. Haven’t spent much time in the 19th.)
Explore Airbnb—it’s easy to narrow down choices according to area, AC, size, price, reviews and cancellation policies. (Each listing has it’s own cancellation policy)I too enjoy the flexibility the Airbnb experience allows. I especially like to shop the local food markets and have the opportunity to eat and relax in the apartment. We have used Airbnb a total of 9 times-- for as long as a month in Paris and as short as 6 days elsewhere in Europe. BTW I only use “superhost” listings —without exceptions the hosts have all been extraordinarily helpful and gracious. Doing everything from making reservations at their favorite restaurants, introducing us to local vendors and even finding a dentist when my husband had a little dental emergency. I like the 11th near the Parcs des Buttes-Chaumonts and the 19th near Pere Lachaise.
A few years ago we stayed at the Hotel Brighton - across the street from a metro station and walking distance to much of the good stuff (louvre, musee d’orsy, musee d’orangeree, etc. Hotel was lovely - cute breakfast buffet (I think included) and we got the slightly more expensive room with the balcony (room overlooked the park and we could see the eiffel tower in the distance from our room). Once I had narrowed down my choice of hotels I used google maps streetview to “roam” the neighborhood and decide if that was where I wanted to be.
