Your Good Buy Of The Day (Part 1)

One of our local grocery stores is doubling the face value of all coupons valued up to $1.98 this week (so if you have a $1 coupon, you’ll get $2 off). I got $127 of groceries for $12.50 this morning. Yeah!

Juba, you should be featured on Extreme Couponing. :)

Downtown Seattle Nordstrom Rack has a HUGE pile of Burberry and Ugg scarves and accessories. Also, there are ladies’ Burberry trench coats 50-75% off retail. I’m burberried out, unfortunately :p

Found a few good buys yesterday.

Accelerade single serving packets at REI online were priced at $0.03/packet. Saved $1.97 for each packet and stocked up for the season!

Local Staples store had iPod Touch and cell phone cases for $0.50 each. Bought one for my cell (originally $19.99) and one for my iPod (originally $29.99). Saved almost sixty dollars with that purchase!

I bought a Levi’s flannel shirt for my H at a Levi’s outlet store. The original price was $44.95. It was on sale for $19.99. All sale stuff was an additional 50% off. I think I ended up paying $10.98 for it (including tax).

Wow, no fair, have never gone to a store that doubles the value of coupons! Wonder how the store stays in business if you buy things at 1/10th of their price.

Harris Teeter, Lowes Foods, Food Lion, Albertsons, Publix, Winn Dixie and others often run double coupon sales. Its when they have TRIPLE coupon sales run in conjunction with the weekly sales flyer especially BOGOs that the real savings kick in. With such a large family to feed, including my 3 hulking boys triple coupons were the highight of my grocery shopping.

I would stock up on my coupons ahead of time and kept a notebook on when the sales ran and what items were on sale year after year. My savings were in the hundreds for those sales, since I really stocked up. Throw in some meat coupons along with the BOGOs and my second freezer was full for months.

With all my kiddos grown I don’t need the same quantities anymore but during the holidays and the summer visits I still stock up right before. I still do coupon though, and clipping services make stockpiling so much more easier.

Kat

Wow, we don’t have any of those markets in our state. I understand the PX sometimes has double coupons, but we don’t qualify for that. I am glad at least I live 5 minutes from Costco & have gotten better value for my $ that way. It’s helpful if I can share some items with others because we don’t like to stockpile food much, especially with just H & me home (doesn’t make much sense & we prefer not to get a freezer).

Yep, Harris Teeter is running the coupon sale this week…they run it periodically about every 2-3 months. Fortunately, there are many bloggers out there who go through and list the things that will be the cheapest and links to coupons to print, as well, so I don’t have to figure it out on my own!

Most grocery stores have sale cycles (certain foods, for example, will go on sale every 2-3 months, if you wait on it, and then you can stock up at the lowest price). I can’t really keep a huge stockpile like some couponers do because I have a small kitchen and no pantry, but trying to buy at the lowest price when possible still helps to save money.

HT actually doubles manufacturer’s coupons every day up to .99, which helps, too; I find they’re a little more expensive than some of the other grocery stores in the area, and the coupons bring things down to a more reasonable price.

A few months ago, we received several coupons in the mail for $20 off purchase of $40 or more at Harris Teeter. More recently, the coupons have been $10 off purchase of $40 or more. HT is more expensive than my local Kroger, but when they offer triple coupon sales, I come out way ahead at HT. I rarely see a 99 cent coupon, but there are plenty of 75 cent coupons that have come in handy. My Kroger only honors double coupons up to 50 cents. Oh, and we were told by a HT manager that even though those coupons that are sent in the mail have expiration dates on them, we can use them after the date. YAY!

Question for all the couponing queens: are manufacturer’s coupons mostly for nonperishable pantry goods, like canned stuff? Other than nonperishables like paper towels and laundry detergent, we buy most nonperishables from the oriental food store, and fresh fruits/veggies/meats from the supermarket. Wondering if it’s worth learning how to coupon if we don’t eat American canned goods.

I use CouponMom or MyFrugalAdventures for coupon matching…mostly things like cleaning supplies, shampoo, conditioner (we use a TON of conditioner, both D and I have naturally curly hair), toothpaste, ziploc bags/containers (bought a bunch at the Target Christmas clearance, used a coupon and got half off), Scotch tape (Target and coupons), laundry soap. Very often they are at the drugstore (bought dishwasher tabs for 50cents this week, won’t need more for about a year).
I do use them on occassion at the grocery store…things like canned goods, rice, sponges, etc.

Dockers.com is having a one day sale today - 20% off and free shipping.

I appreciate those who take the time to post. I look here daily and am amazed at some of the great information. Thanks!

For Target you can use the Target coupons in conjunction with the manufacturers coupons matched up with clearance prices and it works out great! Since super Targets have meat/frozen/vegs/bakery/deli it has also provided fab deals in the past. There are whole blogs just for these combos.

CVS/Rite Aid/Walgreens also run similar savings every week. Again I keep a list and as others have mentioned there are sites similar to CC but not for colleges for coupons and sales.

Heads up for those who will be needing toys: around the 1/15-1/17 Target toys will be 75% off, some of them not all. But it happens twice a year and this is the time to stock up. Mine are all grown, however, I do have nieces/nephews/cousins and baby showers and birthdays and of course angel tree and toys for tots for holidays 2011, so I make up my list and get most of my toy shopping done now. Fill in the gaps throughout the rest of the year. Mostly with books…

Restrained myself at Dillard’s New Year Day sale (50% of all CLEARANCE prices-again holidays 2011 gifts started!)- happens once a year! Combine this with Macy’s 50% off clearance and their $10 off $25 coupon (happens 6 times a year) and the little ones have their next year Christmas dresses, coats, and clothes on a very, very tight budget.

Kat

Totally Target . com is a great site for Target deals. I picked up a few things today, including a Toy Story Alien toy for D, she’s had a tough week and needs down time.
Check Kohls, too, for great toy deals, bought a Disney Princess kitchen for next Christmas for $10.xx shipped to my house (originally $60). This is the time of year I do all the toy shopping for nieces/nephews/cousins/neighbors. Save a lot of money and the gift is there when I need it.

Attention, NR and Nordstrom shoppers! Both stores have discounted their clearance items a bit further. Quite a bit further! I found a $160 (retail) Joe’s Jeans pencil skirt for DD for $47 and a pair of my favorite David Kahn jeans for a whopping $19 (they retail for $150 or so) at a local NR. DH will get an Italian designer leather jacket from Nordies - if he behaves :D

Dicks sporting goods has some North Face last year sweater fleece top for both men and women. They are 50% off. Last year, I bought a Eagle oaks 1/4 zip sweater fleece at 64.00 now only 32.00. Similar quality sweater fleece thos year is 80.00. Vey good quality, thicker than TKA 100,a nd warmer. Not many left but luckily I got the size.

Only today, because the snow, Lord and Taylor on line offer extra 25% off and free shipping for over 99.00. I bought Ralph Lauren polo shirt only 14.99, very nice color for spring. Matching cable knit cardigan now only 29.99.

I love snow day!

I heard someone say that she wished such deep bargains were around BEFORE Christmas because she would buy more things for toys for tots, nursing homes, etc. I told her when I said that once, a woman suggested I do what she does, make a gift box and put things you got 75% off etc after every holiday. She got 2.00 Barbie dolls, deeply discounted puzzles at drugstores, inexpensive gloves and clothes for a fraction of what they cost. Even after Valentines and Easter, toys are discounted that are not in that theme. I wasn’t as good with it last year, but the year before I had a wicker chest full of items to give to various charities. Just a thought…

regarding the above post:
I use clear buckets labeled with the contents to store the items 1-2-possibly 3 years ahead of time especially if I KNOW I will need it and if its 85%+ off. Done this since my kiddos were little, buckets stack so uses only a small footprint of 1 bucket. Easily reached and I don’t end up spending much nor much time. Has worked for 27 years now!

NR in Seattle has slouchy Ugg suede boots (which do not look like typical uggs) that retail for $200. The price sticker said $129, but I decided that it was good enough. Imagine my surprise when they turned out to be $46 at the register! There are still several pairs left:

The store also has smallish Longchamp totes in many colors, but no additional discount.
