Your "I've Met This Famous Actor/Athlete" Moment

wow that is too bad. I hate to hear this, he always seemed like a nice guy. I was happy for him at the Olympics.

I saw Bob Woodward (one of the reporters in the Watergate Scandal) speak at college, he’s an unbelievably funny and smart guy. When speaking about Ford pardoning Nixon of the watergate charges, he said “and you know what? The son of a btch pardoned the son of a btch!” Spoke to him a bit after the talk as well. Overall an amazing experience!

I’ve met a bunch of professional golfers at various tours. They range from ignoring everyone (Woods) to having a real conversation with you. It’s one of the few sports where players and fans mingle and it makes the experience so much more memorable!

“MOWC interesting about Frank shorter, my dad went to university of florida, at the time I believe FS was going to law school there. We frequently would see him running around town, his wife used to go with him on her bicycle.”

He trained (and I think lived) in Boulder when I was at CU. Used to see him running all over town - though I never met him.

I forgot I’ve met Susie Essman. She lives in my town and her step-daughter and my son have been friends since kindergarten. I ran into her in Marshall’s. I didn’t know it was her when I turned and asked how a hat I was trying on looked. When I realized it was her I introduced myself as a mom of her step-d’s friend and we chatted about the kids, I asked her how she liked living in a suburb in upstate NY and then she asked me if I thought the fleece blanket she was holding was a nice one.

I forgot, I also met Rollie Fingers at spring training one year. That was awesome.

You’ll still have an opportunity, xig :)

Met Mike D’Antoni at a hotel I was staying at and Jim Parsons (my favorite actor and possibly my idol) in NYC.

Green button, Jane Goodall spoke at my Ds school, when she was promoting the Roots & shoots program. I made sure that both my kids went, she has some great stories.

Lergnom one of my friends from grade school dad, climbed everest in 1963. I think he was the only one who didn’t have anything amputated. Did you meet one of the Whitakers?

I rarely post, but couldn’t resist. Back in another life when I was working in the film business, I traveled to the Cannes Film Festival. In the lobby of the Majestic Hotel, I ran into a colleague from another company on his way to dinner with a friend (some short guy I didn’t really notice as I didn’t know him and wasn’t wearing my glasses). I declined their invitation to join them for dinner, because I had a meeting to attend, but I did have the feeling that the short guy was a little bit miffed. One of my co-workers who had witnessed the whole thing came up to me and said, “Tell me you didn’t just decline a dinner invitation from Mel Gibson!” (This was before his fall from grace.). I whipped out my glasses and nonchalantly glanced over my shoulder. Sure enough…ah well, just another one of those missed opportunities.

I went to college for 4 years with Kevin Dunn, a character actor who’s been in a number of movies and TV shows, and is a pretty recognizable face. His sister Nora Dunn was on SNL but I never met her.

I chauffered Alan Arkin when I was in college and he came to speak at our campus because my friend who was supposed to do it opened his door into traffic and it was torn off.

I met Jim Brown when he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

I spent a couple of hours talking to Gilles Marini who almost won Dancing with the Stars and was then on Brothers & Sisters.

I met Apolo Anton Ohno when he came to visit my campus and make a speak which happened to be on my birthday. I took a photo with him, got his autograph and was able to speak with him briefly since there was a long line behind me.

I also went to the NBA store in NYC with two friends and we had the chance to met Magic Johnson and take a photo, got his autograph and only had time to briefly exchange greetings and ask him how we was doing lol.

Chuck Mangione used to bring his kids to my Saturday morning movies program when I worked at the local library while in high school.

Renee Fleming and I suffered through confirmation and Sunday School classes together.

My mom met all sorts of rock stars, which is funny because she was an old lady with absolutely no interest in music of any kind and especially not rock. She regularly stayed at a boutique hotel where the bands stayed. Her favorite was Eddie van Halen because they both had hip problems and exchanged canes for a while. My mom had very nice canes. She had no idea who he was. She asked if her son would know him and he wrote his name down for her to read to me.

Another favorite was Eric Clapton. She saw him signing autographs in the lobby and teased him about being famous. He said, “Yes, I’m very famous” and she said they laughed about that. He helped her into her room because he was on the same hall. She again had absolutely no idea who he was. She could never understand why anyone would want a guitar signed. I told her it would be worth more and she said, “Oh.”

Most of the others she described as men with long hair and strange clothes.

My little brother babysat Jane Goodall’s son Grub, but I unfortunately was in boarding school at the time. We were in Tanzania at the time.

Growing up in Lexington, ky, I met many current nba players, such as tayshaun prince, John wall, Demarcus cousins, Patrick Patterson, Anthony Davis (!!!)…

Also, George clooney’s parents have eaten dinner at our house.

Went to a dinner party at which pres bill clinton was present.

Only 17 so hopefully I’ll have many more star struck encounters to come

I got to play golf with Steve Yzerman once. He was everything people said about him. Just a totally natural guy. We talked a lot about our kids. Very little talk about hockey.

With S playing basketball while he was growing up, he participated in many camps and clinics. Many of those had NBA players involved. I think 2 of his most memorable were Kenny Smith (now a commentator on TNT) where S was on the team in camp that Kenny was coaching, and Jason Williams (ummm, before his serious legal problems- we kind of hide that picture). The Nets would run open practices where you could meet players and get autographs. He has plenty of those as well.

As for other celebrities, H and D met Howard Stern about 20 years ago and H still remarks how very nice Howard was to them.

I thought of this thread this morning. Ds just got back from cross country and crossed paths with Olympian Leo Manzano on the trail.

Have a photo of Muhammad Ali holding and kissing my then baby daughter.

Have had Bobby Valentine and Charlie Hough buy me drinks at a bar, and was invited back to his room by another Texas Rangers player. Did not go.

Embarrassed myself greatly talking to Ben Bradlee at a party at his house. Edited Bob Woodward and talked to him a few times about the story. Donald Graham used to sit on my desk and chat with me. Katharine came out and talked to me once while I was eating my lunch and reading a book in the garden outside her office.

Arnold Palmer sat at the next table at a restaurant. My companion and good friend Dan Jenkins went over to talk to Arnie but I didn’t want to intrude.

Half met several big shots in the golfing world.
Mark Clayton nearly landed on my daughter and a friend at a Dolphins practice and told us to stop by when it was over. He gave a football to the friend. Don Shula patted my daughter on the head.

Had drinks with actress Anne Archer recently.

My daughter interviewed CC legend Mythmom.

Met Olivia Newton John years ago in her store on Melrose in Los Angeles. Stood in line behind Stevie Wonder at the supermarket. Saw Geena Davis and Diane Keaton at the Rose Bowl swap meet in Pasadena. Miley Cyrus walked in front of our car in Pasadena, and my husband ate lunch at Pie n Burger next to Michael Cera. Jerry Falwell kissed my daughter on the head in Lynchburg VA (she was a youngun at the time).
My daughter climbed into a limo with Andy Dick in Beverly Hills a couple of years ago- now THAT’s a cringe-worthy story. I’m still upset about it.

H used to babysit George Will’s kids.

We both grew up in DC and spent time on Capitol Hill, so politicians were a dime a dozen! His high school was nearby and his afterschool job was the office boy of a very powerful lobby firm. I was an intern for my Congressman the summer before my senior year in high school and participated in a program where we met Chief Justice Renquist, Jack Kemp and lots of others important people that I can’t remember. SIL worked for law firm that defended Oliver North - she has some crazy stories from that.
