Your kid takes the top scholarship instead of the top school. What's next?

sorry I spaced, I meant it was shot on campus and becausee of that when I go there I think of it more than I do of Dartmouth.

Okay jym626 - so because I am a “newbie” my insight is not worthwhile? Just how many posts does one have to accrue before they become eligible to participate on this listserve - and, uh, how are they going to accrue such if they are insulted and discouraged from posting by member such as yourself?

Do you know anything about my inside knowledge of Harvard? Do you know anything at all about my perspective?

More importantly did you read my message? Do you understand it?

Marite stated, “Harvard has 6,000+ undergraduates. At 45k per year per studetn, it would be subsidizing all 6,000+ to the tune of $270 million per year. Even its $30 billion endowment (much of which is spoken for and cannot be used for undergraduate eduation) would vanish faster than the snow in Cambridge.”

I responded, “Marite, you just do not understand the scale of the endowment Harvard operates. Last year, the earnings alone on the endowment were in excess of 2.5 BILLION dollars. Vanish faster than snow? Hardly.”

So, jym626 - are you capable of understanding basic finance?

An, insider’s view of Harvard is not necessary to do the basic math.

But, more importantly - what gives you the right to insult “newbies”. Are you “threatened by new ideas”?

I know what I learned most from this thread—I want Marite and Calmom on my side.

no prob, oldolddad. Now all I have to do is help clarify what a clinical neuropsychologist is for whoever got that a bit tangled and my work here is done :D

clinical developmental neuropsycholgist. D would get upset is you left that out!

Chipper:

Since you claim knowledge of Harvard, I invite you to read the FAS Dean’s letter to the faculty. It’s on the Harvard website. I won’t insult you by telling you how to navigate the website to find it.
My own knowledge of Harvard is not measured by the number of posts I make on CC.

I also thought that jym pointed out that you were a newbie. Is that insulting?

Chipper-- take a chill pill. No one was insulting you. But you do not know marite. She works at Harvard and has a s who attends. Perhaps it is you who should apologize. You are welcome to post, but it is advisable not to attack, or accuse people of not knowing what they are talking about, when it may be you who is the one who doesn’t know what you are talking about. Just a kind suggestion to RATCHET it down a tad. Sorry, to those of use who know marite, your post was funny!

And she is almost as scary to do battle with as marite or calmom. Come to think of it though I usually agree with them. Maybe afraid not too.

oldolddad- There are Pediatric (Developmental) Neuropsychologists. We call ourselves Clinical Neuropsychologists (when we do clinical moreso that academic work) and the further clarify whether we focus more in Peds or adults.

Chipper~

On behalf of some of us oldtimers who remember when we, too, were newbies, I welcome you to CC and encourage you to stick it out. I, for one, value the respectfully stated commentary from ALL members. I’m sorry if you have been made to feel unwelcome. This board belongs to everyone.

~berurah

Marite said, "Thank you for telling me how Harvard operates. And thanks to jym for bringing this post to my attention. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

Now if billionnaires and millionnaires were to “gift” the amount of tuition their kids would otherwise pay, they would get a nice tax deduction since this would be considered a charitable contribution. Right now, they’re paying full fare out of after-tax income. But anything to make the rich richer…"

Well, if I were you - I think I would choose to cry. I would be embarrassed by such posts.

If the rich “gift” rather than pay tuition, they do indeed get to deduct their contribution. Perhaps, as a result, they would increase their gift. Whether tuition or gift, Harvard gets the cash - and isn’t that the point? Or are you more interested in income redistribution?

But, thanks to you and jym626 for creating such a welcoming environment.

Your graciousness will always be appreciated.

Folks start to get ugly when the decisions they have made for their kids are questioned, that’s what I’ve learned.

Welcome Chipper, stay but know that attacks are to be expected if you have differing views.

“Can’t we all just get along?”

kirmum: learned that too. But that is to be expected.

jum626 - Marite could have been born and raised within the hallowed halls of Harvard for all I care. Her financial conclusions, as stated in her posts, were still grossly erroneous.

But, thanks for the reminder that there is an “inner circle” here - newcomers need not apply!

kirmum-
just curious-- Did you think chipper was being “attacked”?? What about his/her response??

Sorry Chipper-- you are wrong again. We were all newbies at one time, but we learned from experience. You are welcome here in CC and I am sure you have useful information to share. Its just suggested that telling people they don’t know what they are talking about may not be the best way to establish yourself in the “community”. Welcome. Just be nice.

The operative word is “perhaps.” ? wing and a prayer are not the best way to run an institution.

Chipper–there are some pretty big ego’s around here. I’m not sure if even a neuropsychologist could handle them.

^^^^ hahahahaha. (referring to post 1058)

Actually, marite, “newbie” is usually an inherently derogatory term in the chat context, and I tend to agree that jym used it in a condescending tone in response to Chipper’s post a few pages back. Yeah, I realize it was an “inside joke,” but I would have felt insulted in that position as well.
