Your Smartphone; When Do You Replace It?

I had to replace an almost three-year-old android phone because the screen was displaying spontaneous random blue rectangles during the month a family member was hospitalized. Was too distracted to even try troubleshooting it.

DS2, on the other hand, clings tenaciously and proudly to his eight-year-old flip phone.

I replaced mine last summer. Don’t need much- do the ten cents per minute plan. Researched and upgraded to the Moto G5 Plus (and waited for a good price). This phone has bars in our house! and other places the old one did not. Got a new model so it won’t outdate as soon. It does not have the top processor. We have a home phone (ooma so technically not a landline).

Not an Apple fan, especially when I heard about the battery issues with older phones.

Upgrade your desktop to Windows 10! Much more secure. Also search for desktop deals. Even if you are a basic user like I am it is so different to have more power and the newer format. Better.

We used to get new phones whenever eligible and would go with the free or $10 phones. Last time, we switched to iPhones, and plan to keep them as long as they work. 3 years so far (I think?) and a recent battery replacement and still working well. We each have the 6.

“As a woman, bigger and bigger and bigger phones have no appeal at all regardless of the features. I hope I can keep my Iphone 6 forever.”

I know guys like the smaller phones as well. My son specifically wanted an SE when his old phone broke even though newer models were out. Those big phones don’t fit in pants pockets.

I think my current phone is a Droid moto or some such. I inherited it from S17 when he upgraded to go away to school. I use if for texting and talking. I have one app, which in my mind, is one too many, but my employer demands that I have this particular app. I read college confidential and the local newspaper on my phone but I don’t post anything. I don’t take very many pictures and I have one video on my phone, one my D took at a concert we went to when her phone didn’t have enough memory. I HATE paying the phone down every month and have told everyone in the house that the next time they want an upgrade, they had better have the cash to pay it upfront. D’s bf bought her an iphone for Hanukah but nobody else has upgraded since then. I am a semi-Luddite.

I am a heavy user of any phone. But I keep them as long as they are working well. Was easier to do that when you could replace the batteries. Current one is 3+ years old and doing fine. Battery life is still very good. But its a Windows phone. They sold something like 50 of them. At one point I think only Bill and Melinda Gates and I owned one. Now Bill has abandoned me. I suspect Melinda has too. What is frustrating is its by far the best operating system on a phone I have ever had but there are only 25 apps for it (and 15 of those are card games). Something like Beta/VHS: Beta was better but VHS won the marketing war. Likely will switch sometime this year to an android phone for work access issues.

H and I have Windows phones as well. They were practically giving them away at BestBuy. I still use mine for my nonprofit line but my H switched to the android, OnePlus 3+. He really preferred Windows but was sad they couldn’t get a big enough market share as well.

My primary phone is the Asus Zenfone 5, first generation circa 2015. If I am not mistaken, all the second generation Asus smartphones are LTE. I am very happy with it, as for the most part I just make calls and texts, check the weather, and take the occasional photo. Its high resolution screen is great for videos/movies but my SD Card is essentially empty. I purchased a mid-range close-out Sony Xperia recently as a back up (I thought I had lost the Zenfone). The new Zenfones are very tempting, but I’ve decided that there is no good reason to abandon my current phone at the moment. Incidentally, I just switched carriers from T-Mobile to AT&T. Boy what a difference in call quality and reception!!!

I am a gadget person. I usually get the newest phone. The only phone I skipped was the 7. I have a X for personal and 8 for work. I am a fairly heavy phone user.

As an Apple shareholder, this thread makes me happy.

Looks like the Asus Zenfone 5 could refer to the A500CG (2014) or A501CG (2015) or ZE620KL (2018). It looks like the A500CG and A501CG came with 4.4.2 and were upgradable to 5.0, but nothing more recent, and it does not look like they are supported with software updates (for security) any more.

https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/ does not list either for LineageOS. Some Sony Xperia phones are listed for LineageOS.

There are Android apps on the Google Play Store to detect whether your phone’s software is vulnerable to the Stagefright bug, Heartbleed bug, and BlueBorne bug.

The A501CG is my phone. Good screen clarity. The phone works well in every aspect. The 3G limit doesn’t really affect my use, but as I say the second generation Zenfones provide LTE and a more powerful battery. I’m using a battery saver/fast charger app to extend the life of the Z5’s battery and thus delay the need for a new phone. You are correct; Asus no longer provides support for my model. It’s silly that these phones age-out after couple of years or so. Otherwise, Asus is a great company. Solid products. The new Zenfone 5 looks fabulous. Lately the name is a bit misleading in that there are other 5" screen models in the Zenfone line up these days, like the 5.5 inch Zenfone 3 Ultra.

Resurrecting this thread: dH needs a replacement low-cost Android. He doesn’t use it for much except phone, text, occasional photo, and limited apps . Went shopping, and nearly all the new phones are HUGE (by comparison). Just bought one at Costco, but he hates the size, so will try to return in the 30 day window. Great for old eyes, but very uncomfortable to hold while talking, and too large and heavy in his pocket. Your favorites? or even favorite places to shop? Hoping for under $250; a decent camera but nothing fancy; 4G/LTE; expandable storage (he doesn’t keep much on his phone so 16Gb is fine to start); and replaceable battery. His last phone lasted 3+ years except for the battery, and is now also EXTREMELY slow internet connections. (TMobile said they changed their cell towers a few years back and supposedly his phone is too old to work correctly with their version of 4G or LTE service?)

My husband likes the Samsung Galaxy 4 because of the size and performance. It can be had unlocked on Amazon for $150 or less.

I am so NOT a phone person!! I have my husband’s hand me down iphone-- I think it’s a 5?? (With the big fat plug??) I use my phone primarily to text my youngest (“Im here” when I pick her up.) and to join in the group chat at school when we’re awaiting word of a possible snow day.

That said, I’m thinking I want an upgrade. That will make it easier to keep in touch with my daughter when she leaves for school in the fall. (When my son was away last year, it wasn’t as important. He sent the occasional mandatory “I’m fine and school is going fine.” text every week if he didn’t call. But she’s more of a homebody.)

I think my husband, who does care about technology, will probably upgrade. Then I’ll happily take his hand me down.

This thread made me realize I need a new iPhone. Mine is a 5 and it is constantly telling me I’m low on memory.

Time to upgrade!

There are ways to fix that without buying a new phone but as a shareholder, sure, go buy an new phone.

Replaced my Samsung Galaxy S4 mini with a Pixel2 a few months ago. Happy to have a battery that holds a charge, and the photos are awesome.

My Motorola is 4 years old, and it has had a huge crack in it for at least a year. And I somehow deleted the calendar feature. But it keeps on ticking, and week after week, I don’t make it to the Verizon store to replace it. I think the price tag on a new one is definitely contributing to my apathy.

Hanging in there around year 4 with my phone. Only 16GB, but since upgrading to iOS 11.2, I have had no problems with storage (was scrambling a bit to curate before that). I also changed my podcasts app to Overcast, and they seem to take up less storage. No plans to replace until I have to.
