Race Issue

Hey guys,
I'm applying RD to Vandy and i have a problem with the race issue. I know ive heard a million stories about how there is self-segregation and not much integration between the several races at Vandy (the main reason why it was dropped to #3 on my list along with location in TN). I'm from TX and it's a total different scene than TN (not much hype about country music, etc.) but I've already had issues with race at my current school. I'm Asian and I go to a predominantly White HS so i've never felt "wanted" or integrated into my school. I really don't want to experience the same thing in college and thats why I've choose Rice University over Vandy but is their anyway someone can give me a bit more details about the whole race scene and how I can feel "non-segregated" from the mass of students?
thanks guys!

same here! I think that the race issue wouldn't be a big problem because I am part of a program that recruits kids from NYC that are really diverse and giving them a full ride to Vanderbilt University. Since I live in NYC, I don't know how it feels like to be outcasted for your own race. I don't think I can tolerate that, and if anything you can always change that by going out of your comfort zone and meeting new people.. maybe I am a bit naive..

We spoke to recent Vandy grads on this subject and not one ever said one word about race being an issue. Try to keep in mind that on a campus of 6,000+, of course there will be some people who have issues with others but I think that is the norm on any college campus. I read a post about our state flagship (diverse, northeastern school) and there were complaints about the same issue. Unfortunately, racism exists in all forms, in all states and in all universities. My son just got accepted today to Vandy and I am confident he will meet and chose to befriend kind, open-minded, and intelligent people.

If you already feel unwelcome and unintegrated you'll have no problem fitting in here!
