Computer requirements

A bit of a catch-22. Son will start at UStudies and i am not sure if if it is a good idea to purchase the super -duper tablet right away, for upwards of $ 2300.00, or to consider a very good Dell for around $1000 bucks. he will do his best to get into AE by his sophomore year but I need some clarification on computer requirements for this freshman year...chuy, would you know something about this?
