$1,500,000: cash or house?

Just having me a little daydream about a raffle I’m going to win. ;-)

Would you take your prize as 1.5 mil in cash, or a house in your town valued at this amount?

Where I live, it would be closer to buying the town. Hey, maybe it would be a “townhouse”. ;)

I’d take the cash and invest it. You’d be appalled at what $1.5 mil will buy for a house here. Actually, I’d probably invest $1.0 mil and use the remainder to “move up” to a better townhouse.

Show me the money! I could never afford the heat or the taxes!

Wait – is that the HGTV house? Because I am going to win it.

No way am I going to clean a house of that size.

Give me the money, and I’ll hire someone else to clean my current (small) house.

Cash is king.

You have to pay taxes on the prize. So unless you are prepared to service a $600,0000 mortgage, I would take at least $600,000 in cash. Heck, I’d take it all in cash.

In the words of the Steve Miller Band

$$$ Take the money and run $$$

In my lottery fantasy, my payout covers the cost of school for my DD, niece, nephews and DD’s best friend. I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, so a big chunk would go to them, too. My fantasy allows for enough to be left to cover the cost of side-by-side homes on the beach for hubby and me and our best friends. I can dream all I want, but if I never buy the ticket, chances are pretty good it won’t happen.

I can build 652 houses with my project in India for $1.5 mil. One of them would be enough for me. ;)

The money–I love our home & the kids don’t want us to move–ever! You could do so much good with the money!

Why would you ever choose the house? If you take the money, you can take your pick among the houses valued at that amount.

weenie,
i’m sorry, but i’m going to win the HGTV house. please.

I don’t think so.

but weenie, i bet i need more than you. though i do worry that its going to ruin my efc of 0.

Ditto what JHS said. Take the house and you will need a mortgage to pay the taxes. Then you’ve got a house + a mortgage and you will be asking yourself, “Did I win something??”

I’d buy a $600,000 house and rent it out.

Oh the EFC! I forgot about that! We might not be able to take out that subsidized jumbo student loan! ;)

No, its not the HGTV house. I’m not going to tell you what house it is because if you buy a ticket too, then my chances of winning will be less! :-D

I didn’t like the HGTV house that much this year. I still might win it, though. And sell it soooo fast…
