This doesn’t affect me anymore, but it still aggravates me. A blanket 10:00 curfew for youths over the whole city seems excessive. Want to see a show at the Black Cat or 930 Club? Sorry, kid. Movie? Nationals/Wizards/Caps game? If you bring your parents. Only if it’s before 7. I’m well aware that violent crime in D.C. has been a problem for years, but it’s been generally concentrated to a few areas…why not limit the curfew to areas where juvenile crime has been a major issue repeatedly and not issue a blanket response to a recent spike?

I know, it seems like a reasonable measure, and the fact that I’m a teen clouds my judgement, but this still bothers me.

That’s definitely true. The article says that they pulled 2,000 youths off the street so far this year for violations…but that was with the midnight curfew and there are less people on the streets in general at that hour so younger people would stand out more. So they’re going to have more trouble enforcing this one.

jeez relax people, you’re not gonna die. in arizona this kind of curfew existed for long long time, and all the teenagers are doing ok.
and the population of phoenix alone is 1.5 million (ranked 6th in the nation) excluding numerous (and big) suburbs, 3 times bigger than DC.

See, that’s more reasonable, making the curfew graduated based on age. Hell, my parents probably wouldn’t let me out in DC alone with friends when I was 14-15. It lets those of driving age stay out later. I was mostly fine with D.C.'s midnight curfew (I had a midnight curfew on my provisional driver’s license anyway for a while)–it’s just that 10 pm sounds very early to send high school juniors and seniors home (and even some graduates that I know).

haha…glad i’m in maryland!! jeez, most of the movies I go to end at like 11-12, and then dinner afterwards… i probably wouldn’t bother going out at night.

We’ve had a curfew for quite a while. The Youth Curfew Ordinance, SJ Muni Code 10.28.020, was amended on June 21, 1994 through the efforts of the Mayor’s Gang Prevention Task Force and San Jose City Council. Curfew hours are 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. for minors 15 years old and under and 11:30 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. for minors 16 & 17. They don’t enforce it much though. I was out for movie premieres at three in the morning when I was 14 (and I didn’t even know about the curfew until a few months later), so it really depends on the circumstances, I guess.

Seriously, what the hell is wrong with your cities that you guys need government mandated curfews? I can sorta understand for small towns and gated communities which are pretty much insiginificant in the big picture and where the most serious crimes are public urination - the politicians there just have nothing to do but screw around. But DC? Christ, I could never imagine my Friday nights ever ending before 4AM.

It’s July 20th, and there have already been 15 murders in D.C. 14 people were killed during the first 12 days…the ones that really freaked people out was when British man had his throat cut in an affluent Georgetown neighborhood, and a two groups of people were robbed on the Mall. Most of the other murders were in the poorer sections of D.C. that non-residents rarely go to, Southeast neighborhoods. So the city government wants to do something, I just think they stepped a small step too far with the curfew. I would rather see them mirror Phoenix and San Jose and institute a graduated curfew based on age.

Yikes, it’s unfortunate that you live in (or near) such an unsafe city. I’ve never lived in a city that had more than 100 murders a year ever (Toronto and Montreal, both of which are cities of over three million people) so I was speaking from a totally different viewpoint there.

My parents have been mugged and even held up once. There’s at least one new murder or disappearance or kidnapping or something of the sort everyday in the nearby cities. It sucks, but I still love my city, I just can’t wait to get out.

Well, San Jose has been the safest large city in America since 2001, so instituting a lenient curfew makes sense. The only real problem we have here is the increase in reports of police brutality…

Hmm…the curfew in DC that actually takes effect today is 10pm for those 16 years and younger. So 17-year-olds are in the clear…it’s only lasting until school starts again, so I doubt it’ll have much effect.

It won’t, never has…the cops might crack down from the murders but not for long. Now a city that needs a curfew, or atleast enforce it is Baltimore, idk how high up it is on the Murders and Violent Crimes list but its up there

Is it mainly the 16 year olds that are comitting the murders in Washington? If not, I doubt the curfew will have any real affect outside maybe decreasing the acts of vandalism, street racing and public drunkeness.
