10 Words a Day. Session 1

<p>Starting from today, I will be posting 5 SAT words that are most likely to appear on the actual exam. I will start it out by posting definitions and example sentences of each words and I want you all to participate using the words and the format given below. Although 5 words a day may not be enough, this is a chance for us to not only learn vocabulary effectively, but also turn passive vocabularies to active vocabularies that we can use in daily conversation. </p>

<p>Write a brief story (containing at least 3 words from the list).</p>

<li><p>Disaffected(adj) - rebellious, resentful of authority
Example 1: Dismayed by Bobby’s poor behavior, the parents send their disaffected son to a military academy to be disciplined.
Example 2: The disaffected citizens showed no respect for the greedy dictator who forced people to pay high taxes for his lavish, extravagant palace. </p></li>
<li><p>Dither(v) - to be indecisive
Example 1: Not wanting to offend either friend, he dithered about which of the two birthday parties he should attend. </p></li>
<li><p>Dissuade(v) - to persuade someone not to do something
Example 1: Worried that he would catch a cold, she tried to dissuade him from going out on winter nights. </p></li>
<li><p>Divisive(adj) - causing dissent, discord
Example 1: Her divisive tactics turned her two friends against each other.
Example 2: Gay marriage is a divisive issue that caused discordance in America</p></li>
<li><p>Engender(v) - to bring about, create, generate
Example 1: During the Olympics, the victories of U.S. athletes engender a patriotic spirit among Americans. </p></li>

Last night at my friend’s birthday party, one of my friends suggested buying alcohol. I disagreed with his suggestion and dissuaded him. Divisive in nature, he sparked a dispute that engendered enmity between us.</p>

<p>*The title should have been “5 Words a Day”.</p>
