I’m going to (likely) build a gaming PC once I get back to my dorm in a few days. The problem is that I don’t know if it’s a good idea to do so. I earned A’s in all but one of my classes (1 B) last semester while gaming almost daily. My biggest concern is the PC’s safety. I can trust my roommate because we’ve got to know each other over the duration of last semester and he has a laptop and an Xbox 360. However, there’s still a big if factor involved because of how expensive it is and the fact that there are pretty shady kids around my dorm. Are there any safety precautions I should take to keep it safe? Also, I’ve had the ground on my side of the room flood before from some mysterious water source. Should I buy something to prop up the PC so it doesn’t get wet, and if so, what? Since it’s a gaming PC, do I need to keep it spaced out or is it sufficient to leave the fan side unexposed?
lol people have macbooks that cost more than your PC and people leave theirs out in public all the time. Nobody is going to break their back trying to steal your PC.
Keep your door closed and locked. That’s how you keep it safe. No one is going to steal a bulky computer.
Put the tower on a desk to keep it off the floor.
In addition to keeping the door locked when it’s empty, you could also buy a lock that’s made for desktops, rather than laptops like this: http://www.kensington.com/us/us/v/4482/1664/desktop-and-peripherals-locking-kit?awc=6350_1452016646_ab5eb29455023920de74182d0ef9769f&cm_mmc=AFFILIATE--85386--Sub%20Networks%20-_-VigLink%20Inc-&awinChannel=aw#.U-52vRJdX20
I agree that a laptop is a far more desirable target than a desktop, but if you’re gonna spend $1k on the computer, spend another $35 and weed out another 95% of potential thieves who don’t carry the tools capable of cutting those locks.
It depends on what college you go to. At mine it would be gone in seconds if you left it out. My first week in my college there were two dorm break ins at my hall. Crazy stuff.
