100k student loan after 4 years

I got accepted to Sfsu but I’m out of state. The cost is around $35000 a year. They offered $25000 loan and the rest is paid off by pell grant and work study. I’m majoring in pre nursing but idk how much the starting salary in California is for nurses. Should I still attend? Also my parents will not be helping me pay

You cannot borrow that much without a cosigner, which is a bad idea for both you and the cosigner.

What other schools at what prices do you have?

Other csu schools haven’t sent me their financial aid yet. Even if my parents do decide to help me pay, they only make a total of 20k a year :frowning:

Cali isn’t handing out FA to OOS kids, as you have been advised already. What instate option do you have?

The CSU’s do not fund OOS students.
Federal Pell and Work study wont cover your costs at any CSU. (Work study monies are dependent upon your finding a job on-campus and that is usually about ~$3000 per year).

Parents must take out the Parent Plus loans. If your parents only earn $20K per year, they may be denied the loans.

All you can take out is $5500 the first year,
$6500 the second year,
and 7500 the third/fourth years.
How will you pay the rest?

Go to your instate college.

Wait I thought the pell grant, work study, and loan are all financial aid?

Pell grant (max = $5700) work study (~$2K-3K) and student loans ($5500) will come from the federal government (~$14,200).

You wont get California State aid. You will still owe ~$21K. Where will you get that money?
San Francisco is VERY expensive. Those numbers don’t include required health insurance fees of ~$3k and travel expenses.

What is your home state? Are you applying there and to CC in your home state? Cali is not a place for OOS students unless they are top students at full pay at the top schools. Impacted classes and financial issues mean average students with financial need don’t waste time or money applying. OOS students are cash cows for cali schools.

I reside in Guam

You cannot afford SFSU.

None of the California public schools will give you in-state aid (UC’s nor CSU’s).

You will only be receiving federal aid (Pell, work-study and student loans) and that aid will not cover your total costs.

There’s no guarantee to get into the Nursing program at SFSU. My friend has a 3.8 GPA and she is transferring out because of the limited spots for the Nursing. You’ll be paying two years of tuition for a chance to get in. Going to a community college in CA would be a better option.

I’m sorry you misunderstood how financial aid works.
Your HS counselor should have informed you that just because you may qualify for federal financial aid that does not mean that public universities will offer free educations to OOS residents.

The taxpayers of the states fund those schools. California has very limited funds to fund its resident students, so they charge OOS students with full fees, for all 4 years.

You appear to be eligible for federal aid but, federal aid is very limited. I think the Pell maximum is $5800.

Public universities like UCs/CSU’s cannot afford to give aid to OOS students.

Did you apply to any privates like Chapman, Santa Clara, USD? They are private and have more monies for OOS students.

Than thank you for clarifying. I got accepted to Sfsu, Csuf, and csusm

$25,000 per year in loans for a family that is Pell eligible is WAYYYYYYY too much in loans per year…way too much.

You say you are in pre-nursing? There are nursing programs in EVERY state at at least one public university. Did you apply in your state?

This CA college is unaffordable. Your freshman student loan would be $5500. Anything above that would be either a Parent Plus, or a private loan cosigner by your parent.

Unaffordable.

@thumper1, she’s from Guam.

@tc do you have college options in Guam?

^These are all CSU’s and will not be giving you any aid because they can’t afford to do that.

Are there college options in Guam?

Why did you choose the colleges you chose? Who advised you?

Are you a native of Guam, or does your family reside there for some other reason.

No, a $25,000 loan is not financial aid. You have to pay this back and it would be for parents to take out which they simply cannot afford. AuntBea listed the total amount of loans that you personally can take out. This school, unfortunately, is just not an option for you.

Is it too late to apply to UoG?

It sounds like you’ll need to take a gap year and requires apply to colleges you can afford. You cannot borrow that much and your parents will not be approved for such huge amounts relative to their income.
What are your stats (GPA, test scores)?

Your other threads say you have an 1100 new SAT and 4.2 weighted GPA. You won’t likely qualify for aid at any CA colleges. Are there any schools in Guam where you can study nursing? If so, I’d go there.

My advice is the same as @MYOS1634, take a Gap year and redo your college list to target schools where you would get enough financial and possibly merit aid to be affordable. I would also target direct admit nursing programs, where you are accepted into the program without having to go through 2 years of pre-req’s and then apply.

For California, the schools that would fit some of this criteria would be University of San Francisco, Dominican University and Azusa Pacific University. California has only a few direct admit nursing programs and the rest are public Universities where you would get only Federal aid. You will need to cast a wide net and Good Luck.
