I see a bunch of schools doing this on their threads (Penn, Stanford, etc) so I wanted to start one! I’m a 2016 ED admit so I only have so much to contribute. But I’ll start off.

The fact that some of the world’s leading scholars teach at Columbia. Case in point, I have a class with Eric Foner this Spring.

It has fantastic and interesting students who are more than their GPA. I’ve met so many incredible people, and I’ve only been there a semester! The people you meet at Columbia will be some of the most interesting, motivated people you will ever meet. Gotta love it

tsar, you’re the 10th person I’ve talked to who’s taking “Radical Tradition” this Spring, and I don’t know any history majors. Should be a great class!

It’s worth reading, although more depressing than this thread. I added a couple of posts towards the end.

edit: my bad, i thought this was in the GS forum. Oh well!

ORGO NIGHT!!!

I’m shocked that no one mentioned this…yea, it’s somewhat lewd, but orgo night is a tradition that sets Columbia University and its clever band apart from other schools. I mean c’mon who doesn’t love a good side-splitting Barnard joke the night before your exams? Orgo night is something I’m looking forward to, now lets hope i get accepted,lol!

Here’s an excerpt from the fall 2011 Orgo Night, you can find the videos on youtube.

"Welcomes itself back to spirited, saccharine, strangely antiseptic, sedulous, sententious, sesquipedalian, semicircular, semi-centennial, solipsistic, recently fumigated, (yet still in need of fumigation!) College Library, where the shelves are long-lasting, but sadly not the men, and the women are checked out but long overdue. As well as human trafficking on Columbia’s campus going up, Public Affairs students…going down, and your professor’s heavy breathing at an all-time still not sexy, the Band now presents its 54th consecutive, 69th semi-annual drive to lower the curve in Organic Chemistry while consummating the world’s largest simultaneous Orgo! And so, in the interest of everyone’s enjoyment:

SEAS students, please turn off your electronic devices.

Bree: GS students, please turn up your hearing aids."

Tyler: CC kids, please set your phones to vibrate;

Bree: and Barnard girls, please set your vibrators to phone. Let’s start the show!

That’s not just an excerpt from the Fall. That’s been the standard introduction for years. The “please turn off your electronic devices” joke was added in 2009 or 2010, I believe.
