I am registering for the CSS and D hasn’t filed. Last year she filed a 1040EZ because she only had W2 earnings. This year she will have unearned income. She can still file with a 1040EZ correct?
Thank you!
If she has unearned income other than taxable interest, unemployment compensation or Alaska Permanent Fund dividends, she cannot use the 1040EZ.
Good point 4kidsdad- taxable scholarships and grants, although considered earned income for filing purposes (but unearned income for the kiddie tax/Form 8615), can be reported on a 1040EZ. So OP, if by “unearned income” you mean taxable scholarships and grants, your daughter may be able to use the 1040EZ.
Can form 8615 be filed with 1040 EZ?
I looked at my daughters’ from last year (Taxact). For D1, she had $1900 in unearned taxable scholarships so did not need the 8615 and TaxAct chose 1040EZ. For D2 she had $6100 in unearned taxable scholarship so TaxAct spit out a 1040A and the 8615.
Appears the answer is no, if you need 8615, you need to use the 1040A.
