10k Gap? Help!

I am trying to bridge a $10,000 gap in order to pay for my first year of college. My SAT score is 1820 and my ACT composite is 29, with a 31 in English. I will be attending a college in Georgia and I will have HOPE and Zell Miller, but are there any other scholarships that I can apply for that emphasize on good ACT scores or multiple leadership positions?

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Is $10,000 your net price after subtracting grants and scholarships (not loans or work-study) from your school’s list price?

If so, then you can probably stretch to cover it with a $5,500 direct loan and $4,500 of work earnings and/or frugal living.

However, if you are $10,000 short after applying a direct loan and work earnings, then that will be difficult to cover.

Would you consider other schools? With your 3.98 GPA and test scores, you may be able to come up with a big enough scholarship at Tuskegee, Howard, or Prairie View A&M, if it is not too late to apply to those schools for scholarships; see http://automaticfulltuition.yolasite.com/ .

But what about the 2nd-3rd-4th years’ gaps? What is your plan to cover those?

No, you want to attend a college in Georgia, but if you still have $10k gap after federal loans and work study, that may not be an affordable option. I know you want us to come up with a solution for you . . . but there may not be one. :frowning:

Can you post your school’s COA breakdown? how much is tuition, room, board, fees, books, travel, personal expenses

Also post your award…details

How much will your parents pay

I haven’t applied for any loans or grants yet. My parents do not mind paying for every year, but I’d like to use scholarships to cover a majority if not all of the costs. Zell and hope will be maintained throughout my 4 years if I keep my GPA up, which I believe is possible. I will not be attending a different school. I am asking for any scholarships references that I can apply for that I may not know about already. Thanks

You will have to search like anyone else does, but usually there is a need component and you are very late in the scholarship cycle. Deadline for Coca cola for instance was last October.

Oh I love your initiative! Have you tried looking for scholarships for undergraduates entering your major? I know there are scholarships out there for undergraduates interested in teaching, engineering, math, journalism… the list goes on. Many schools have a list of foundation scholarships. My son’s first choice school has over a hundred foundation scholarships. But there is a deadline for applying to these. Maybe schedule a meeting with your school counselors for more ideas. Good luck.

Glad to hear you have the resources to cover the $10k - wish you had said that to start with! On this forum, too, too many kids have their hearts set on absolutely unaffordable colleges, and there’s rarely a good outcome.

I don’t have any scholarship suggestions for you, but it brightened my day to find out that what you’re trying to do is cut back on your parents’ expense. Best of luck - I hope you succeed!
