I went on a 10 month-long exchange in Japan from the middle of March in 2006 to the middle of January this year. I thus missed the second half of the spring term of my sophomore year I got as far as midterms, the fall term of this school year, and I rejoined school again last month a couple of days after the spring term began. I heard that colleges usually only look at your gpa from the 10th and 11th grade of high school. I have only completed one term of classes in the 10th grade and will have completed one term of classes this year, so that’s half of the work that I should otherwise have Does this make sense?, and is this a problem? I am making up some required courses right now and will finish the rest next school year when I’m a senior.

Colleges look at all your grades from high school (some don’t put a lot of concern on Freshman year, but that’s not the case everywhere). They also look at the courses you’ve completed. You’ll be able to address your exchange time in Japan in your apps…I’m assuming that some of the things you gained in your experiences there are far more important than whether you were able to take AP Psychology, Economics, etc. If you are really concerned about anything specific you missed, you can look into taking classes this summer at a community college.

I’m not too concerned because I’ll be able to graduate on time with the required classes I missed made up, but I have all of my honors and ap classes lined up for next year. Anyway, thanks for answering my question. :)
