11 from my school...

There are 11 people from my school applying early to the school I am (Yale). Obviously, they can’t take all of us. Here’s what I know:

Girl #1 - double legacy. 2nd place in national essay writing contest. grades about equal to mine - strong in english/history, weaker in math and sciences. lower SATs than me. I don’t think it matters - she’s probably getting in.

Boy #1 - extremely intelligent, esp. in math (taking 3rd year college math right now). very strong runner (all new england). higher grades than mine, probably around equal SATs. I say he’s likely to get in.

Girl #2 - very smart (2nd year college math now). really good SATs (National Merit). likely to be valedictorian. not great ECs. asian.

Girl #3 - hard worker. also in valedictorian running. weaker standardized tests. extremely talented dancer, does town-wide youth committees, etc.

Girl #4 - good grades (better than mine), good SATs (slightly weaker than mine). President of student government, athlete.

Boy #2 - very smart (like Boy #1 in math). great SATs (had a 1470 in 7th grade), National Merit. good, but not great, grades.

Girl #5 - hard worker. in running for val. better grades than me, but weaker SATs. VP of student government.

Girl #6 - better grades than me (slightly), weaker SATs. an athlete, but not good enough to be recruited.

Boy #3 - not too sure about this one. also in 2nd year college math. ok SATs, I’d say, and grades probably slightly weaker than mine.

Boy #4 - weakest applicant. weaker grades and SATs than me.

ME! - good grades, but not amazing (just make top 10%, probably about 25/300). v. good SATs, National Merit. Hispanic (my school is 90-some percent caucasian, and the rest arre asian). decent ECs, not amazing, but not bad. I’m also in 2nd year college math now (12 people in my class - 3 of them are applying to Yale, and 2 who already took the class are as well! not cool!)

I would say 1-3 have a very good chance of getting in. #4 and myself might make the cut, though I would only get in b/c of my minority status, and even then, i think I’m more than likely to be defered. Yale has a very good relationship with my school - one year, 5 people got in early, so its not ridiculous to think they would accept so many, though its rather unlikely.

What are your thoughts?

What college math classes are you considering 2nd-3rd year, and what college is it taken at?

well, “1st year” is considered AP BC. “2nd year” is multivariable calculus. Both are offered at my school. “3rd year” - those two kids are taking an online course in … something beyone multi. not sure what.

Forget handicapping this. Yale admission is pretty random. I’m trying to discourage my dd from applying, but she likes the school. I consider it a waste of effort when there are so many schools who will love her. She has very good but not great gpa and scores from a very demanding school, but she has a killer hook, I think. There are some kids who have better stats than her, but they don’t have the faculty respect, the EC’s and the GC said it is entirely appropriate that she apply.

if only all could be determined by EC’s, awards, grades and SAT’s. but it is not so

These are the people who will probably get rejected
5,6,7,8,9,10

The only ones who might get accepted are
you 1, 2, and 4.

Your URM, that’s your hook,

 1. double legacy should get her in
 2. should be recruited
 3. her dance is her hook
