119th & Amsterdam

My son is looking at a sub let - at a university apartment that is at 119th and Amsterdam - elevator building. Supposedly University owns it.

1.) does anyone know what building this is?
2.) does it have AC
3.) what is the area like?
4.) how close to bus or train? (One will take a bus, one will take a train to work.)

thanks!

I have a daughter at Barnard so I know a little about the neighborhood.

That address is on the back side of Columbia … on this map [Map of 3009 Broadway New York, New York by MapQuest](http://classic.mapquest.com/maps?city=New+York&state=NY&address=3009+Broadway&zipcode=10027-6909&country=US&latitude=40.809362&longitude=-73.963035&geocode=ADDRESS) … the Columbia campus is shaded slightly darker. (It looks like a university building but I do not know)

My daughter and her friends spend more time on Broadway but they also have a couple favorite restaurants on Amsterdam also … Morningside Heights is a great neighborhood in Manhattan … although for people who do not like urban environments this might be a tough fit.

There are bus and subway stops within a block or two of campus. To where are the roommates trying to commute?

I’m not sure exactly what building you’re talking about, but the closest train will be the 1, which is on Broadway and 116th, probably around a five to ten minute walk. As far as buses, I only know about the crosstown bus, which leaves from around the same place, though there very well may be other buses - I just tend not to take them, as the subway system has always been satisfactory.

The area is nice. The building will be right by the northeast side of campus, by the engineering/ computer science buildings, and there’s an entrance to campus a block or to down. As 3togo mentioned, there are lots of great restaurants on Amsterdam. I live on the Broadway side, too, so I’m not over at Amsterdam too frequently, but there are a number of eateries I’ll frequent over there (the Hungarian Pastry Shop, some Thai place I just learned about), and there’s a grocery store that should be only two or three blocks north of your son’s apartment.

My D lived at Plimpton Hall (Barnard) which is at 121st and Amsterdam. She (and we) loved the area. Can’t tell you anything about that particular building, though. I had to look up the address of Plimpton to make sure you were not talking about that building, but apparently it’s a couple blocks away…
