I will try and post the link, hope that works.

That’s just pathetic. The endless search for a relatively powerless group that we can soak in our quest for more blood… I mean revenue. The real issue is touched at the end of the article. Too many nonprofits exempt from tax. If the universities use so many city services then maybe they should pay. And maybe the churches should too.

It took several weeks for the Journal to pick up this story. I still don’t think it will go through.

The tax is completely legitimate. Cities have every right to tax whatever economic activity that falls within their city limits that they wish. If they can tax visiting professional athletes (and many do), they can tax students.

It is not tax on students. It is a tax on absentee parents.

Sure they tax them for working, i.e., it’s an income tax.

Pittsburgh is not the only city proposing a tax on college students. Last spring, the mayor of Providence RI proposed a $150/semester tax on out-of-state students attending one of the 4 private colleges within the city’s limits (Brown, RISD, Johnson & Wales, Providence College). State residents and all students attending public universities would be exempt from the tax. So far, the schools have been able to stop the tax, but the idea is still being pushed by the mayor.
