12th grade math class?

Hi,

In 12th grade, I will be able to take AP Calc BC and/or Advanced Topics in Math. (I will have taken AP Calc AB in 11th grade.) Because I want to take an extra science AP, I have to decide between the two math classes. So…which class should I take: Advanced Topics or BC?

What is in advanced topics, and what types of majors in college are you considering?

BC is more likely to be useful if you will go into a high math major in college.

@ucbalumnus Advanced topics has matrix algebra, partial derivatives, euclidean vector spaces, calculus of vector-valued functions, and basic set theory/logic. I’m considering majors in Chem, CS, BioE, and EE.

I would take BC…As an Engineer you need to take that so you might as well get it out of the way so you can start with multivariable calculus in college. The other topics may be helpful at some point but not for a few years.

I agree with @bopper. You need BC as an engineer, so that would be the more important class.

I’m surprised advanced topic does not have calc BC as a prereq. Definitely take Calc BC before delving into those topics in math.

Calc BC may get you AP credits potentially useful particularly for engineering. I am not sure if you can get credit from the other course unless it is DE or something like that.
