“The Emory Advantage program, which provides need-based grants to mitigate the financial burden for qualified students who are accepted to the University, recently received an estate gift totaling $14.4 million from the estate of James E. Varner, Jr. (‘43C).

Varner chose to allocate his gift to the College to “support students and the College’s greatest need,” wrote Melissa Kontaridis, senior director of development for the Office of Development & Alumni Relations, in an e-mail to the Wheel. The gift will be used to establish a University endowment fund which will support recipients of Emory Advantage grants for years to come. The program delivers the option of an Emory education for qualified undergraduates whose families’ annual incomes amount to $100,000 or less.”

How generous of Mr. Varner, relieving the financial stresses of complete strangers to study at Emory. I definitely respect and appreciate this.

I cannot express how much I appreciate Mr.Varner’s gift, I truly admire his action, and hope to one day give back in a similar way.
