This is my first post on this forum. I’ve been reading a lot of the posts in this forum but have registered just to ask a few questions on the SATs. It’s all a little bit confusing for me. I come from a British curriculum school in the country of Thailand.

I have just taken a ‘practice’ SAT (mock) without any preparation and have just received my score. Without essay and grammar, my score is 1430 (out of 2400), I realise this is below average?

Will taking SAT prep classes make any difference?

Will the grammar + essay section add another 200+? Or will it not make that much of a difference?

I don’t plan to get into any Ivy League school, but my GPA isn’t bad considering (a 3.8, because of the British IGCSE and A-levels)

On the title you said “Without Essay/Writing Grammar?”
That’s confusing… Anyways, people might say prep classes are useless, but if your score is that low it might help. Go give it a try.

It’s that low? It is just a practice, and I have never done the SAT before in my life, nor have I practiced for it beforehand. Well in that case, I hope I can make it at least 1700+

Prep tutoring would be a good idea. Talk to your school counselor to get a good recommendation for a tutor. Are you a junior or senior? If a junior, then you have some time to prepare well and take the March SAT. You can retake again in fall of Senior year if you need. It is possible to bring your scores up, but it’s going to take a lot of effort/work. You can self-study (see Xiggi’s method pasted to top of threads), but I think in this case I would just go straight to tutoring and then self-study again a few weeks before you take the test in the spring.

Then register for a couple SAT II subject tests if you can and take those in May or June.
