<p>Summer: a time of relaxation, repose, and much-needed rest after a grueling nine months of school. And lIke every other student, I cherish my summer recesses.</p>
<p>Summer 2013, I spent an extensive amount of time volunteering weekly at the Long Island Children’s Museum near my hometown. My responsibilities included assisting children in arts and crafts, and monitoring and maintaining different galleries.</p>
<p>Leading into the summer of my senior year, 2014, in between my mandated required summer readings I furiously searched for a job, filling out approximately fifteen lengthy applications at libraries, bookstores, and supermarkets. I quickly discovered that most employers aren’t too keen on hiring high school students. Luckily, I was eventually hired as a cashier at a popular local cinema. Although I frequently had to appease angry, bickering customers, my first employment experience proved to be both rewarding and interesting on many levels, and the insight gained from interacting with the public was invaluable. I also appreciated the opportunity to develop additional multitasking skills and to recognize the importance of being meticulous.</p>
<p>The highlight of summer 2014 was my tour of Guatemala, where, among other things, I explored ancient Mayan ruins and absorbed the vibrant culture of this Central American country. I wrote several online blogs along the way on subjects ranging from architecture and landscape to culture and food - including the world’s greatest tacos!</p>
