17.3" screen too much for a student?

<p>I’m looking at the two laptops below. They are pretty much the same but one has a 17.3" screen and 5650 while the other has a 15.6" and a 5470. Not too worried about the better graphics. Will likely do some gaming but I doubt it will be enough to really appreciate the difference. I will, however, enjoy the larger screen. That being said, first and foremost this unit is for school purposes. Will I regret having to lug this thing around campus just so that I can take notes in class? Weight wise its less than a 2 pound difference so I figure that’s no biggie. That’s like an extra book. But will I regret the extra size? The extra screen size could be a blessing or a curse. Just trying to decide which. Hoping to hear from those who have had a 17.3". Thanks to those who give input! Btw, if anyone has suggestions I am open. No more than $1000, preferably under $800. Mostly just interested if someone knows of something with similar/better specs. Battery life is also important. Not a big Gateway fan or anything these two pc’s just happened to give a lot for the price. Was looking at a Toshiba with a i7 720 but reviews said she died quickly (battery wise I mean), so I ruled it out. Was tempted at $900 though.</p>

<p>If you’re going to be taking this laptop with you everywhere, then i’d say get the 15" laptop because the weight and size of the 17" model will eventually get to you when you have to carry it all over campus. However, if you enjoy a larger screen and don’t mind the extra weight, I’d go for it and get the 17" laptop.</p>

<p>Thanks for the reply Big Cat. The argument certainly goes both ways. Unfortunately things like this are rarely clear cut.</p>

<p>Feel I should also mention how I will be transporting this thing. I would like to find a messenger bag as well as a good backpack. I like the option of not having to use a backpack when I don’t need it, but most of the time I probably will use one as my dorm is across campus and I’m sure I’ll have books and things to carry as well. Guess this is key as the larger laptop probably wouldn’t make as much difference in a backpack. Anyway, would still be nice to hear from someone with experience.</p>

<p>I know that at some places the desks would be too small to easily balance a 17" laptop on them.</p>

<p>If you need the extra screen size, I’d rather go with a 13" laptop for mobility then hook it up to a 24" monitor back at your dorm/apartment.</p>
