17 And Expecting A Child

Hi, I am currently in 12th grade and on my way to college. My girlfriend (Also 17) tested positive on her pregnancy and we’re expecting in a few months. After the January- December FAFSA application deadline.

I plan to major in Computer Science.

My family plans for my girlfriend and child to live in the household while I attend a CSU nearby.

I was accepted for a job and plan to gain income soon and provide for my son/ daughter.

How would support work for me and my family if I intend to go to college?

By how support would work for you and your family do you mean financial aid for you?

The first thing to determine is whether you are dependent or independent for financial aid.

The key thing for that is, assuming you will be starting college next fall:

It sounds like your family, rather than you, will be providing more than half the child’s support during that time period if you are in school. A part-time job during school, even if full-time during summers, probably isn’t going to allow you to provide over half the child’s support, considering expenses you will have to pay for yourself. Babies are expensive.

If you run some numbers and do believe you will be providing over half the support, then you may be asked to document the amount of support you, yourself are providing.

Are there any plans for marriage?
