I have the choice between a 17" Everex xt5000t laptop with an AMD dual core turion 1.6 ghz cpu and a 15" dell vostro 1500 with a core 2 duo intel 1.6 ghz. The Vostro is newer and will most probably perform better, but I would be sacrificing workspace.

Does anyone with college laptop experience see a use for a 17" monitor? I’m leaning towards the Everex.

Help me, this decision is tearing me apart!

There are advantages to a 17" monitor. Personally, I would never use one since I am a huge ultraportable fan, but advantages include:

extra screen space usually means you can fit more on your screen, movies/video games will look better, your computer monitor in whole just kinda “fills you up”

If you aren’t going to move around with it a lot and battery life isn’t important and you don’t mind having a 17" monstrosity (this term only comes from my personal bias) sitting on your desk, then by all means get the 17" notebook.

I’d say go to some random electronics store and just kinda feel up the different screen sizes on various notebooks. Once you know you prefer one, get it!

For most users, the difference in processor performance will be negligible, while the screen size is something you would notice every time you use it.

Also look into the Inspiron 1520. While the Vostro 1500 may give you a bit better bang for the buck, the Inspiron gives you a bit more flexibility in terms of choosing options geared toward the consumer.

Since it’s obvious you’re not getting the laptop for gaming (from the specs), getting a 17" doesn’t seem worth it. So I think you’ll be better off with the Vostro.
