Am I the only one? I can’t tell if it’s the clothing or the photos of the models. They look stiff and boring. Whom are they targeting? Are they trying to have the kids’ grandparents buy the stuff? Yeech!
What are you referring to? I expected a link in your post.
I believe T26 refers to ads by these people: http://www.1883clothingcompany.com/ . I noticed them here for the first time myself yesterday or so. The whole thing looks like a final project for a business class. I don’t mean that as a judgment. I mean it could really be that.
Apparently they have Cornell and Yale clothes. Are these official college clothes? Or is this a clothing company trying to make “collegiate” clothes? I don’t get it.
(Then again, I am not their target demographic, so I doubt they’ll care.)
I don’t get it either - i would not invest $125 in a sweatshirt. A quarter zip or a fleece maybe, but would not pay that for a sweatshirt.
Too much time on my hands today.
As far as I can tell, 1883 is a pet-project for James Kamedulski, a 2014 graduate of Cornell. According to LinkedIn, James spent the last year as a Marketing Assistant at Morrell and Company. He calls 1883 a freelance project, but I think it is his own project.
If you hit https://james-kamedulski-sc5w.squarespace.com/ , you will get the same site. squarespace.com is a generic webhost, like GoDaddy. You lease space there, and they give you a sub domain of their domain. You can also point your own domain at the same address.
So I’m thinking James isn’t trying to sell clothing as much as he is trying to sell himself. Go, James, go.
(This is all basic research, BTW. I’m not painting myself as some Chloe O’Brian.)
Actually – this is a real start up company and they are not sweatshirts rather sweaters… And James is absolutely trying to sell vintage inspired collegiate clothing. It’s really nice stuff – high end cotton sweaters with wool felt applique numbers or letters. The photos are of the sample sweaters received in January – the initial order of Cornell and Yale sweaters is on its way. You can currently pre-order sweaters for delivery later this month. The class year sweaters are replicas of woolen sweaters that many Ivy students wore in the 40s-60s – one of my high school classmates has a photo of her dad wearing his 1946 class year sweater (from Yale).
My name is NOT James but I am an investor in the company.
Ha Ha. Preppy goes big retro.
I’m not commenting on the underpinings of the company – I hope it goes great – I’m simply speaking as a person who has viewed the advertisements and found them not to my preference. If the company can make a mint, I’m all for it.
I see the genius here. Then, again, I’m not the target demographic.
(At least, I don’t think I am)
@VeryHappy The sweater designs are licensed by the schools, if required. The class year sweaters do not need licensing.
I am not the target demographic either, but I’m not sure who is. Definitely not my kids. Maybe we are on the wrong coast. Since the sweaters are cotton with a wool applique, I wonder if they have to be dry-cleaned? That would make them a definite no for us.
I actually like the pictures, especially since the models look like real people, and the product seems attractive. I like cotton sweaters. My only concern would be whether the color would bleed into the applique when washed. Dry cleaning is not appealing. They should definitely branch into some more colors.
I’d suggest green.
@Consolation They are just starting!!! Green is more than on the boards; there are some green ones but not on the website yet since they were only samples, not in production.
When my son entered Dartmouth, the official Dartmouth store was selling green sweaters with his year knitted into the front. It looked just like these sweaters, only green.
Not my cup of tea but I wish them luck.
If they can make a few bucks off those ugly sweaters, good for them! Maybe they should advertise themselves as “ugly collegiate sweater” co - you ultimate source of things to wear to your ugly sweater Christmas party (the red is a good color choice, and adding green would be awesome).
