I graduated early from HighSchool and took a year and a half off working slowly realizing that I am going to go nowhere without a college education. :)]
I am now planning to go to CC this fall and tackle it hard and hopefully get my GED in less then 2 years or as quick as possible then get a associates degree in computer science and eventually transfer to a UC school such as UCSD and get a Bachelor’s. (at least that’s how I think college works)
Anyways, when should I start applying? Any tips?
I’m such a higher education noob and didn’t take high school seriously. I want to turn my life around and be someone I can be proud of!!
I do have a Highschool GED. I meant to say College General Ed classes, what ‘s the abbreviation for that? ’ lower-division general education requirements’
I would abbreviate it just as Gen Ed. If you are going to be attending college this upcoming fall (community college or a 4 year university), you will want to be applying for financial aid now. Mostly all schools will require a FAFSA, which you can complete now at FAFSA.ed.gov. Are you a California resident?
I do have an SSN. In fact I worked at the college i’m applying to as a seasonal worker (doing landscape work) This Friday I am going to go pickup my last check. I presume I should just go talk to counselors while i’m there…and have them help me fill out my forms…
Also make sure you apply for California Dream Act, which will award you a Cal-Grant if your family is low income and you meet the GPA requirements. Here are details on the application: http://www.csac.ca.gov/dream_act.asp
It is due by March 2nd for 2015-2016, so don’t miss the deadline. This is going to be one of your main sources of funding for school if you qualify, as a DACA student is not eligible for federal aid.
kgos16 you’re amazing. I will start this Friday by speaking to a financial counselor at the college. I hope my Highschool 2.5 GPA wont affect me much! I was a total goofball. I know I was and am better then that. If you have any more info I should be aware about let me know! Thanks again!
From the CSAC website: “Students who meet all the Cal Grant eligibility requirements, and have at least a 2.0 high school GPA and apply by March 2 of the year they graduate from high school or the following year are guaranteed a Cal Grant B. Students awarded an Entitlement Cal Grant B must confirm their high school graduation at www.webgrants4students.org before funds can be disbursed.”
The Cal B has a lower income ceiling than the Cal Grant A, so your parents will need to fall under the income ceiling specified to qualify. I hope that you didn’t miss the window of opportunity to file - a year and a half out of high school might be too late.
Within one year after you graduate. So even if you have to go straight to work before going to college, you don't have to miss out on a Cal Grant.
As a community college transfer student, as long as you are under the age of 28.
As a high school senior.
Within one year of getting your GED
There must be another way. ‘Students who meet all the Cal Grant eligibility requirements, and have at least a 2.0 high school GPA and apply by March 2 of the year they graduate from high school or the following year are GUARANTEED a Cal Grant B’.
I’ll just wait to see what a counselor has to say before I get even more depressed. Granted… ‘or not (pun not intended lol)’ I’ll still be interested in going to school and doing my best to succeed either way,
Unfortunately, CSAC is pretty strict with their time limit requirements. It wouldn’t hurt to give them a call to discuss the time frame you are looking at for returning to school.
