when?

“No way to prevent this” says only country where this happens on a regular basis.

  • The Onion.

This morning.

There was a school shooting in Texas yesterday.

I live in an adjacent county and have several colleagues whose children attend Marshall County HS. Two of my colleagues had children who witnessed the shooting today. Some of my students asked me to allow them to keep their phones out while waiting for news of their siblings who attend the HS.

Twenty years ago, a school in my county had one of the first mass school shootings. The shooter had been on my son’s preschool soccer team. One of the members of the prayer circle attacked in that shooting was a next door neighbor, although thankfully he was uninjured.

My S called me early this afternoon to check in and commented on the fact in 1997 this was national news and CNN covered the joint funeral for the three young women who died. Now school shootings are just something that happens every so often and it would likely not rate a story, but maybe a headline on the news crawl. Not okay.

@2VU609, I saw this story on CNN’s front page. Full article and video, certainly not just a headline crawl.

It also got coverage on our local news station in Dallas:

And the shooting in N.M. that killed two students…and the shooter.

What a couple of days. So sad.

I was surprised it was the lead story on NBC Nightly News. Pardon my cynicism about the level of interest nationally. I know there are many who care, but too few in power seem willing to work towards prevention. I am sad for those affected in TX & NM as well.

I believe we are better than this and we must do the hard things to reduce these episodes. That includes better mental health awareness (particularly with regard to bullying), as well as common sense gun controls and legislation to hold parents responsible for allowing access to weapons & ammunition. I know this is pushing the terms of service, but I’m going to risk saying it based on the suffering I’m seeing in my area today.

Gun control is on its way to becoming technologically irrelevant. I predict within a decade anyone who wants to will be able to 3-d print a gun at home using designs available on the internet.

shrug just a few more casualties in the fight for freedom!

To paraphrase Chrissy Teigen, “It’s Tuesday in America.” :frowning:

I have to say I am surprised that there has been so much attention paid to the shooting at Marshall County. CBS This Morning led with the story today. I just wish I felt hopeful that these conversations would lead to a meaningful change. There is something about having this happen in your community twice that has numbed me to that hope. So much lost for so many…

@roethlisburger -I don’t think that is the case at all. So does that mean some change regarding guns shouldn’t be implemented?

This is about mental illness, not guns. You also didn’t hear about 4 people killed and 15 shot over new years weekend in Chicago - which is pretty light weekend by Chicago standards. It’s only shocking because it happened in a rural area.

It’s shocking because it happened in a school. The violence on the south side of Chicago is expected, usual, the status quo and therefore not news.

Eh, only two kids dead. No big deal. (sarcasm)

I heard in one report on the most recent one that this is the 11th school shooting of 2018. Appalling.

11th in 2018? It’s only January.

Not surprised.
