Is this score sufficient to get me into University Park or do I need to take the damn SAT one more time? I just got my June score back, and its a 1940 (640 CR / 580 M / 720 W), and 1970 if I use my March math score of 610. I really don’t want to take this test again but if a 1940 will really decrease my chances I guess I have no choice. Also, I have about a 4.0-4.1 weighted GPA.

They don’t superscore, they look at the best individual sitting. In any case, I think you’re still in good shape with those stats.

The average stats for class of '09 from son’s school (a very competitive, highly ranked NYC public school) was 1958 SAT and 88 average (unweighted) for the 49 accepted students.

Well your GPA is good so you might be fine. You’re CR and Math are avg. but your GPA is weighed in more. I wouldn’t take it again either way.
Which college?

the Penn State University Park campus. I mean…I guess I’ll just take the ACT once to see how I do in comparison and then I’ll take the SAT one more time in senior year if i really feel bad about this score. If I knew for sure that this score would get me into UP I’d just stop taking standardized tests all together.

Well according to Collegeboard their average SATs are CR: 530-630 and Math: 570-670. They don’t list writing, but your score is still higher than a lot of people’s who got in I’m sure. What’s your unweighted gpa? If you took a pretty strong courseload, you have a good chance of getting in.

I meant which college within UP are you applying to?

Oh, ok, College of Engineering…I’ll be taking the SAT one more time to get a higher math score. I messed up when bubbling one section and forgot to skip a bubble when I skipped a question halfway through. My unweighted GPA is somewhere in the range of 3.8-3.9 I believe.

My courseload:
Sophomore Year: Geometry, English II, Biology, Technology I, Spanish II, World History II, Service Learning.
Junior Year (I transferred to a different high school in order to obtain a more challenging courseload for junior and senior years): Pre-AP English, Pre-AP US History, Honors Chemistry, Technology Careers (required grad credit), Health (required grad credit), Algebra II, Precalculus (at the same time, so that should show that I’m able to handle multiple math courses simultaneously…I really wanted to take calculus before I graduate), Intro to Engineering.
Senior Year: AP English, AP US History, AP Calculus, Physics, Principles of Engineering.

Off topic but will being an in-state first generation college student boost my chances or do they tend to not care about that?

being a first-gen will help slightly. YOu indicate that on your app.

First gen only helps if they decide to really read your app essay (I don’t think I actually wrote one now that I think about it…cant remember :P) In-State doesn’t make a huge difference.

For Engineering I would still say you have pretty good chances since your GPA is high tho.

Alright, thanks. I’ll shoot for 2000+ on my final SAT this fall, but I know 1940 should be enough to get me in.

Actually I believe there is a spot on the app to check if you are a first gen or not so it would directly be considered whether or not they read your essay. I may be mistaken though, I may be confusing it with another college.

Generally, I’ve heard if you have a 1290 SAT (M+CR) and 3.5 GPA you can get in to PSU Main campus…don’t know if it is the same for out of state
